Kicks Off Childcare Center Campaign
The Foundation announced
its $1.85 million fund-raising campaign last week to support the Costco-BCC
child-care and family learning center. This
unique public-private partnership addresses a growing need of families
and businesses to find childcare and other family learning solutions.
It is meant to become a model in the Pacific Northwest that can be
replicated. The private funds will augment $2.3 million given from
the state, cities, county and business partners. Ground-breaking for
the 22,000 square foot facility on the NE corner of campus is expected
this summer, with completion targeted for early 2001.

Honoring Volunteer Tutors
BCC’s Adult Basic Education (ABE) program
will honor 60 volunteers from 6-8 p.m. April 12 in the Garden Room.
These volunteers give their time and talents to help nearly 300 ABE
and ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) students achieve their personal
and professional goals. They tutor students, assist teachers in the
classroom or Basic Skills Lab and host “Talk Time,” weekly conversation
sessions for adult learners. Look for photos and memorabilia from
the volunteers' work in the cafeteria display case next week.
For more information about the event or volunteer opportunities, contact
Tess HelesHunt at 641- 2349.
Luncheon To Raise Scholarship

On April 26, friends of the college will
gather at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Bellevue with one mission in
mind - supporting students. The “Opening the Door” fund-raising luncheon,
sponsored by the BCC Foundation, will raise money to fund scholarships
and help students achieve their educational goals. The Foundation
hopes to raise $30,000, which will be awarded during fall quarter
and as on-going scholarships. Eastside Journal columnist Patti
Payne, President Floten and students will speak at the luncheon. The
event replaces BCC’s annual fund-raising auction. For more information,
contact Becky Baumgardner at 644-5074.
