Foundation Kicks Off Childcare Center Campaign
The Foundation announced its $1.85 million fund-raising campaign last week to support the Costco-BCC child-care and family learning center. This unique public-private partnership addresses a growing need of families and businesses to find childcare and other family learning solutions. It is meant to become a model in the Pacific Northwest that can be replicated. The private funds will augment $2.3 million given from the state, cities, county and business partners. Ground-breaking for the 22,000 square foot facility on the NE corner of campus is expected this summer, with completion targeted for early 2001.

Honoring Volunteer Tutors
BCC’s Adult Basic Education (ABE) program will honor 60 volunteers from 6-8 p.m. April 12 in the Garden Room.  These volunteers give their time and talents to help nearly 300 ABE and ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) students achieve their personal and professional goals. They tutor students, assist teachers in the classroom or Basic Skills Lab and host “Talk Time,” weekly conversation sessions for adult learners. Look for photos and memorabilia from the volunteers' work  in the cafeteria display case next week. For more information about the event or volunteer opportunities, contact Tess HelesHunt at 641- 2349.

On April 26, friends of the college will gather at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Bellevue with one mission in mind - supporting students. The “Opening the Door” fund-raising luncheon, sponsored by the BCC Foundation, will raise money to fund scholarships and help students achieve their educational goals. The Foundation hopes to raise $30,000, which will be awarded during fall quarter and as on-going scholarships. Eastside Journal columnist Patti Payne, President Floten and students will speak at the luncheon. The event replaces BCC’s annual fund-raising auction. For more information, contact Becky Baumgardner at 644-5074.

In the News
Local papers featured news of outstanding BCC students and staff last month. Johnathan Jolley, a 39-year-old recreation leadership student and Tae Kwon Do expert, was named a “student standout” by the Eastside Journal (http://www.eastsidejournal.com/sited/retr_story.pl/14081).  Mark Yoshino, BCC men’s baseball coach, was featured in the Eastside Journal article (article unavailable online). The article profiles this successful Interlake High School grad and details his coaching career.

The Issaquah Press featured Teri Hull’s positive experience with a youth mentor program for her son. Teri, a computer services consultant in Academic Computing, raised two sons on her own and found support through the Success Program. (This article is unavailable online.)

New Marketing and College Relations Director Nancy Hilliard details her first impressions of returning to BCC in an editorial in the Mercer Island Reporter. Nancy attended BCC as a student in the 1970’s and took a logic class from Jon Wulff. She gives an entertaining account of the changes to BCC since then. You can read the editorial at:http://www.mi-reporter.com/archives/miopinion_archive/0223nhhillardcolumn.html.

Members of the BCC Jazz Band were also featured in the Eastside Journal in March. The students recently took home honors from the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho.

News of BCC’s new child care and family learning center was covered in the Seattle Times, Eastside Journal and Daily Journal of Commerce.

A New Quarterly Schedule
Starting fall quarter, BCC will have two separate schedules for credit and continuing education courses. The schedule split will allow for earlier production of credit class information and a more targeted publication that meets the different needs of credit and continuing education students.

Spring Cleaning Reminders - Is your site up to date?
Some tips for cleaning up your websites-

  • Update your BCC logo.  Many sites out there do not have "legal" logos on their site.  Your department, division or class website is required to contain a legal BCC logo. Download a BCC logo for your website on the new BCC Web Publishing Guide at:
    http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/webpublishing/tools/logos
  • Prepare for the phone prefix change on April 10. Scan your website and locate all pages that reference BCC phone and fax numbers now. Be ready to upload your changes on April 10. All phone numbers should include the new “564” prefix.
