BCC Students Journey to Cuba
Aslam Khan, political science program chair and Model United Nations advisor, and 9 students traveled to Cuba in mid-February for a taste of Cuban life. The students, all members of BCC’s Model United Nations organization, will represent the country’s views at a national Model U.N. meeting in New York in April. After months of planning,  including securing permission from the government to visit Cuba, the group set off on a week-long adventure to learn about political and social life on the island. They met with government officials and educators, toured Havana and joined a march of 200,000 protestors who demanded the release of 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez. The group thanks Ron Leatherbarrow and Jean Floten for making their trip a reality. Stop by N201 tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. for a slide presentation and Q & A session with one of the students. Or, attend a presentation on the impact of the economic embargo on Cuba in room B204 at 10:30 a.m. on March 7.

Local Treasures
On Feb. 15-18, the BCC Student Child Care and Early Learning Center displayed masterpieces by many unknown artists - the 18-month- to 6-year-old children who attend the center. Original works from 80 children were displayed in the L Building and the cafeteria. At the opening reception, children, families and others gathered for punch, cookies, a tour of the artwork  and a silent auction.  The $430 proceeds from the auction will support child care scholarships. The first-time event was planned by the Parent Advisory Committee and the staff of the Student Child Care Center. Thanks go to all who supported this event.

Under the Big Blue Tarp
Has your curiosity been piqued by the mysterious project under wraps in front of the Student Union Building? The Campus Operations crew and project artist Virginia Paquette are preparing the “Millennium Gardens.” Virginia, an ARTS 2000 faculty member, created this work featuring a recurring arc pattern as a conceptual bridge to connect the new millennium and the importance of education. You’ll be able to lounge in the new space to admire the plants, flowers and colorful mosaic tiles. The project is funded by the Washington State Arts Commission Percent for Art Project.

BCC Debuts New Department
The new Department of Applied Linguistics and Language will begin offering classes for English-as-a-Second Language students this month. Jim Bergstrom leads the new department, which will help the growing number of non-native speakers polish advanced language and cross-cultural skills necessary to achieve their professional, personal and educational goals.  Our campus hosts as many as 5,000 students from 70 - 80 different cultures. The first class is “Writing From Sources” and other topics like language structure, academic communication, cultural components to effective communication and accent modification will follow. For more information, contact Jim Bergstrom at 649-3134.

Keep It Running
Keep your printer running smoothly - and support student athletes at the same time! Cross-Country Coach Stella Orechia is coordinating a printer cartridge recycling program that will fund athletic scholarships. Simply save your used Laser Perfect Inkjet computer and fax cartridges and drop them in collection boxes across campus through the end of spring quarter.  Cross-country team members will use the proceeds to support their team. You also can bring in cartridges from home. Look for collection boxes on campus next week or contact Stella at 641-2353 for more information.

Movers & Shakers
Congratulations to staff, faculty and students for their recent accomplishments:

?       Kaoru Miyata, a 62-year-old student from Japan, had a book published last month about his educational experience at BCC. He donated 100 copies of the book to the college,  which will use the proceeds to support other students. “Young Again in America” chronicles Kaoru’s experiences at BCC and his immersion in American culture. He was so impressed with the community college system, which doesn’t exist in Japan, that he would like the Japanese government to model a similar program for senior citizens. Last week, Kaoru shared his stories at the Senate Hearing on International Education in Olympia.

?       Media Maintenance Tech Lead Judith Pile recently passed a certification exam with the Society of Broadcast Engineers for the video engineer level. Judith is the first person in the state to achieve this rank and one of very few females who work in broadcast engineering. Candidates must work in the field for at least five years before earning this certification, and only 60-70 percent of applicants pass the exam. The Society of Broadcast Engineers is a national training and standards organization focusing on the technical aspect of the broadcast and recording industry.

?       Diagnostic Ultrasound faculty member Joan Baker was selected to study the quality of ultrasound procedures for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This agency responds to the U.S. Congress prior to passing legislation on health care issues. She testified regarding occupational injuries to sonographers at the OSHA hearings in Washington, DC last month. Joan was also recognized last month at the 25th anniversary of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), an organization she founded.

?       Physical Education Program Chair Harriet Newton recently was named in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” College students may nominate one teacher who made a significant impact during their academic experience. Harriet joins only 2.5% of American teachers named to this list.

?       NWCET Executive Director Neil Evans was the keynote speaker at a symposium at Gonzaga University last month. Neil shared his knowledge about high-tech training and e-commerce with members of the Spokane business community.

Respondents preferred to receive internal news via campus e-mail (76%). Everyone shared a different preference for the type of news that is valuable (such as campus events, faculty/staff accomplishments, campus and general community news). Thanks again for sharing your views.

Off the Vine
A new lifelong learner has entered the world! Congratulations to Jeff Johnson, who heads Continuing Education’s program development, and his wife, Lorie, on the birth of their daughter last week. Bridget Elise Johnson was born Feb. 22 at Overlake Hospital.

Did you know…..One BCC administrator has a fraternal twin named Don. Any guesses? Ask around and see if you can find the answer before the next issue of The Grapevine. Do you know someone who has an unusual hobby or an interesting story? If so, e-mail your interesting news tidbits to me about BCC faculty and staff members, programs, facilities or the history of the college and I’ll share them with the campus.
