BCC Welcomes New Trustee
Jim Dagnon of Medina was appointed by Gov. Gary Locke as the newest BCC trustee. Jim will serve a five-year term to help set college policy and strategic direction. He joins trustees Ruthann Kurose, J.C. (Dell) Jackson, Robert Margulis and Lee Kraft. Jim is the “Senior Vice President of People” for The Boeing Company. He was appointed as a member of the governor’s “2020 Commission on Education” in 1998. A dedicated volunteer, he serves on the board of directors for the Seattle Children’s Home Society and INROADS, a national industry mentoring program for minority youth.

Top Students Named to All-Academic Team
Michael McDermott of Bellevue and Jason Derus of North Bend are BCC’s nominees to the All-Washington Academic Team, a prestigious competition that recognizes outstanding academic and service contributions of community college students. They will be honored Feb. 25 by Gov. Gary Locke in a ceremony in Olympia to recognize top students. Both are completing their transfer degrees and plan to transfer to the University of Washington. Michael is the president of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and volunteers as a peer mentor and a columnist for The Jibsheet. Jason wants to pursue a career in computer science or architecture. He is the vice president of Phi Theta Kappa and volunteers with Disability Support Services and the new student mentoring program. Congratulations to these outstanding students!

Grant Establishes BCC BEARS Program
The Student Health Center received a $22,000 grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation last week to fund the BCC BEARS (Breast Education Awareness, Referral and Support) program. The grant will fund a part-time health specialist who will provide breast cancer awareness education and workshops, breast self exam training and mammogram referrals. It also provides funding to start a campus-based breast cancer survivors support group. The program will be available to both students and staff. Stay tuned for more details  from the Student Health Center.  

Honors for the Music Department
Music Department Program Chair Dale Gleason will be inducted into Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame during the association’s bi-annual conference in Yakima Feb. 18-21. Dale is being honored for 35 years of music education service in Washington. BCC’s vocal jazz group “Celebration” will perform at the opening concert of the conference.

Expanding the IT Connection
As part of the Working Connections grant from Microsoft and the American Association of Community Colleges, BCC’s Information Technology (IT) Department has been mentoring four community colleges and one university to improve their IT programs over the past two years. Southwestern Oregon Community College and San Diego City College were just added to this consortium. Congratulations to the IT faculty and staff, as they share their expertise with educational institutions across the country.

A Super Staffer
Congratulations to Chequita Williams-Cox, the Classified Employee Association Employee of the Month for January! Chequita is a program manager in Educational Planning and Advising and has been with the college since 1984. Nominators praised Chequita’s professionalism, optimistic attitude and dedication to serving students. One nominator said, “Chequita is a focused, hard-working individual who is always willing to help. She is an inspirational resource on campus for students and staff.”

A Special Valentine
Share the gift of life this Valentine’s Day by giving blood. The mobile blood center will be on campus from 9am - noon and 12:45 - 3pm on Feb. 14-15 in the central courtyard. For more information, contact Willa Mathison in the Student Health Center at 641-2489.

Coming Attractions
Look no farther than the BCC campus for fantastic events this month:

    Black History Month - Celebrate Black History Month with a host of events sponsored by Multi-Cultural Services. Events take place from 11:30am - 1pm unless noted otherwise. Highlights include a lecture by Dr. Quintard Taylor of the University of Washington (Feb. 4, Carlson Theatre), a diversity dance workshop (Feb. 14, Cafeteria), a slide presentation of Africa (Feb. 15, Garden Room - C130E) and a performance by comedian Debra Wooten (Feb. 24, 1:30 - 2:30pm, Carlson Theatre).     Persian Poetry and Music - International Student Services and the International Student Association  bring a taste of Persian culture to campus at 7:30pm on Feb. 5 in the Carlson Theatre. Performers will play traditional string instruments and recite poetry in the Farsi dialect.  A $7.50 donation will be requested at the door.     Big Band Jazz Festival - Get ready for the battle of the bands when 34 jazz bands from Washington and Oregon compete for top honors in the Big Band Jazz Festival Feb. 11-12. Playoffs between  the top three bands take place at 7:30pm in the Carlson Theatre both evenings. The BCC Jazz Band and acclaimed jazz artist Randy Brecker also perform. Tickets are $5 seniors, $10 general admission. For more information, contact Hal Sherman, 603-4059.

Off the Vine
Congratulations to BCC employee Amy MacNeill (formerly Amy Wheeler) who was married Jan. 15. Amy started at the college in 1998 and works as an office assistant in High School Programs. She and her husband, Joshua, now reside in Kent.

Margin of Excellence Forms Are Available Online - Nominate a BCC employee by visiting http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/bccweb/news/moe

Students Tax Information Available on the Web - Students may retrieve their total tuition payments for 1999 and find out if they are eligible for The Hope Scholarship and Lifetime Learning Tax Credits online. This service will be highlighted on the BCC splash page during the month of February.  Go to the BCC website (http://www.bcc.ctc.edu) and click on “1999 student tax information” in the Hot Sheet section.

Coming Soon- A New Resource for BCC Web Developers!  Website templates and BCC logos are two of the new features available in an updated BCC Web Publishing Guide that will be launched later this week.
