BCC Named WebCT Institute
BCC and the NWCET were recently named among
an inaugural group of WebCT Institutes. The WebCT Web Course Management
System is a software program used to help instructors organize
their online classes using tools like bulletin boards, chat rooms,
e-mail and online quizzes. BCC was named as one of the institutes
for its commitment to offering top-quality online education and will
help set competencies and serve as a regional outreach center to meet
the growing demand for online training for faculty.
BCC Milestones
BCC is bigger and better than ever! Last
fall, over 20,000 students enrolled in the college, and more students
are attending full time. BCC vocational students also earn higher
salaries than their counterparts at other community colleges in Washington.
Their median hourly wage is currently $15.95.
A Rising Star
Nikia Knight, the program coordinator for
BCC’s Career Education Options (CEO) and WorkFirst programs, is launching
her very first CD! Recording as a solo artist under the name Pantha,
Nikia will release “Pantha Party,” a rhythm and blues/rap CD, in February.
Her songs address issues of single parenting, education and the struggles
of minority women. Nikia has been singing as long as she can remember
and has participated in her church choir for many years. Still an
active choir member, this new project is an exciting adventure for
BCC’s very own Nikia Knight!
A Project by Design
This quarter, students in Karen Raphael’s
Public Space Planning class have been asked to create designs for
the proposed iQuest Children’s Museum in Issaquah. Students will design
a conceptual structure and interior design plans for a 20,000-square-foot
space. They will make plans for an admissions area, lobby, staff offices,
library and exhibit space. Last year, Karen’s interior design students
created plans for the historic Kalakala ferry.
BCC Leads State Math
Competition
After round one of the American Math Association
of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), the BCC math team is in first place
with a slim lead over North Seattle, Edmonds and Olympic Colleges.
Over 100 BCC students participated in round one of the competition
and William Yip, who is ranked third in the state, was BCC’s top scorer.
The second phase of the AMATYC competition will begin in February.
Extended Hours for Child
Care Center
Starting this quarter, the BCC Student Child
Care and Early Learning Center has extended evening and weekend child
care hours. Evening child care is now offered until midnight on Monday
through Friday. Weekend hours are Saturday and Sunday from 7:00am
- 7:00pm. Child care is available to students, faculty, staff
and community members on a space-available basis. Please call 641-2240
for more information on how to enroll.
Finding Healthcare Solutions
Ann Polin, chair of the Diagnostic Ultrasound
program, has been named as a member of the Washington State Healthcare
Personnel Shortage Task Force. The task force was created to address
the critical shortage of healthcare workers that currently exists
in the Northwest and throughout the country. The group, which includes
other healthcare and hospital personnel, is meeting to discuss long-
and short-term solutions from a variety of perspectives. Ann will
examine educational solutions to meet these challenges.
Campus Ops Staff Earn
