New BCC Trustee
Lee Kraft of Mercer Island was recently
appointed to a five-year term on the BCC Board of Trustees by Governor
Gary Locke. Lee replaces Sally Jarvis, who retired from the Board
in September. As one of five college trustees, Lee will help set policy
for BCC. Lee is an attorney in her firm, Lee Kraft & Associates.
She previously served as the Bellevue City Attorney and a judge for
the King County Superior Court. She is active in many civic and charitable
organizations, such as Bellevue Rotary, Mentor Health Northwest, and
the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.
Beyond the Call of Duty
Congratulations to Maura Borselli-Karnes,
who recently received a service award from the National Association
of Veterans' Programs Administrators (NAVPA). The award was presented
to Maura at the national NAVPA conference in October and honors her
exemplary commitment and service to veterans nationwide. Maura, who
has been at the college since 1989, works as BCC's veterans
affairs coordinator. She helps veterans who want to start a college
career and serves as a resource for veterans administration staff
across the country. Congratulations on your outstanding efforts for
veterans, Maura!
Career Expo
BCC Career Services is hosting an International
Trade and Career Expo on Wednesday, December 1 from 10am-4pm. Stop
by some of the following events and activities:
- Forums on global trade featuring prominent
speakers from the business world with different points of view.
- Career workshops with the latest tips
on resumes, behavior-based interviews, and the hidden job market.
- Display booths featuring BCC programs
in E-business, Model United Nations, study abroad, and more.

Out and About With BCC
Faculty and Staff
BCC staff and faculty are busy this fall!
Here's a sample of what they've been doing:
- Nancy Gonlin, an archeology and anthropology
instructor, is publishing her first book! Copan:
The Rise and Fall of an Ancient Mayan Kingdom
will be published in early 2000. She co-authored the book, which
covers numerous archeological excavations of Mayan ruins in Copan,
Honduras. The book is based on several years of archeological
excavations by the three authors and is targeted at college students.
- Chemistry instructor Walter Volland
is participating in an online chemistry conference sponsored by
the American Chemical Society this fall. He contributed a paper
on the importance of spectroscopy, the study of the way that light
interacts with materials. Visitors to the conference site can
review various paper topics and ask questions of the authors online.
Walter received several hits to his site and is currently fielding
questions about his paper from people around the world. You can

- Carol Burton, Berthe Habib, Cathy
Lyle, and Donna Sharpe represented BCC's Critical Thinking and
Information Literacy Across the Curriculum (CTILAC) team at the
"Work Now and in the Future" conference in Portland
on November 9. The BCC group presented an overview of assignments
and projects that are used in classes on our campus as part of
the CTILAC project. They also shared principles of critical thinking
and engaged the participants in a collaborative exercise in critical

- Carol Forte, job developer in Worker
Retraining, participated in the International Career Development
Conference in San Diego in early November. Carol learned strategies
from career development professionals around the world to help
clients find job satisfaction and career direction. She participated
in workshops on job search tactics, career coaching, career development
and retention of good employees. For more information on these

Events
Don't miss these great performing arts events

- "Chemistry of Change"
Fall Drama Production
- The BCC Drama Department
will present "Chemistry of Change," a new play about
an unlikely love affair between a matriarch and the devil. The
production will be held, free of charge, at 8:00 p.m. on November
17 - 20 in the Stopgap Theatre. For more information, please call

- Holiday Jazz Concert-
Get ready for the holidays with a performance
by BCC's vocal jazz group "Celebration!". Roger
Treece, BCC's vocal jazz director and a two-time Grammy nominee,
will lead the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble during a performance
at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 22 in BCC's Carlson Theatre.
Special guest "m-pact, " a professional, Seattle-based
a cappella group will also perform. After the concert, you can
attend a CD release reception for "m-pact's" latest
CD The Carol Commission.
Tickets are $12 general admission and

- Fall Jazz Band Invitational
- Join the BCC Jazz Band,
under the direction of Hal Sherman, and guest bands from Newport
and Juanita High Schools for an evening of great jazz music at
7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23 in the Carlson Theatre. Tickets
are $5 general admission and $3 students/ seniors. For more information,

- Symphonic Chorale and Chamber
Choir Holiday Concert
- The BCC Symphonic Chorale
and Chamber Choir present "Holiday Music from Across the
Big Pond: Songs and Carols from Great Britain and the United States."
Join these talented students, under the direction of Ken Wilson
and Jerry McManus, for an evening of beautiful carols in celebration
of the holiday season. In addition to performing Christmas carols,
Hanukah songs, and popular holiday tunes from the 1940's and 1950's,
the ensemble will tie the music together with joyous dance and
a story written by local playwright and BCC instructor Tammis
Doyle. The concert will be held on December 3 - 4 at 7:30 p.m.
in the Carlson Theatre. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at
the door or by calling 641-2694.
We're Talkin' (Free)
Turkey
Stop by Institutional Advancement (A102)
on Thursday, November 18 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and take your chances
at winning a 20-pound turkey. Take aim at a picture of a turkey with
toy darts and pick up your Thanksgiving meal the easy way. Three people
with the best aim will win a free turkey. Sorry - meal preparation
not included!
Mentor A New Student
You can help make the BCC experience even
smoother for new students by participating in the CEO and Student
Programs Mentoring Program. There are still openings for faculty,
staff, and students to participate in this pilot project beginning
winter quarter 2000 and ending spring quarter 2000. The goal
of the mentoring program is to help ease the transition for incoming
students. A three-member team will provide them with campus resources
and information to support their success at BCC. You can attend a
daily orientation session on November 15 - 18. For more information,

BCC's Hall of Famer
Congratulations to Dale Gleason, who was
just nominated into the Hall of Fame of the Washington Music Educators
Association. The induction ceremony will take place at their bi-annual
conference in Yakima on February 21. Dale is part of the second group
of inductees since the inception of the award in 1997. He joins former
BCC Music instructor Harley Brumbaugh and present instructors Hal
Sherman and Jerry McManus as members of this prestigious group.
Beat the Flu Bug
If you didn't get your flu shot last week,
you still have one more chance. Stop by the Carlson Theatre from 11:00am
- 3:00pm on Tuesday, November 16. For $11, you can get protection
against tough new strains of the flu this year.
Off the Vine
Congratulations to grounds crew member John
McDonald and his wife Heather on the birth of their first child! Ian
Finbar McDonald was born on November 11. He weighed in at 8lbs., 2oz.
and 19.5 inches. John has worked at BCC since 1992, and has been an
invaluable member of the grounds crew for a little over a year. Grounds
manager John Carroll speculates that Ian was born with two green thumbs.
Like father, like son?
Woody West extends a hearty
thanks to Myra Van Vactor and the entire Library Media Center staff
for the recent addition of a DVD player for classroom use. The new
DVD player will enhance the quality of information that students view.

Winter Quarter Massage
It's back by popular demand! We're working
to find a date for our massage therapist to return to campus in early
December. A 15-minute chair massage is offered for $10. A portion
of the proceeds will go to the BCC Foundation. Stay tuned for more

Offers Online Ordering
BCC students now have the option of ordering
textbooks through the Bookstore's website. This is an especially welcome
improvement for students enrolled in BCC online classes. Online students
are often constricted by distance or are working full-time jobs and
can't come to campus during regular service hours. Visit the Bookstore

to see this new option.
