Making A Difference Through the Annual Fund
The BCC Foundation kicked off the annual fund drive last week and set a goal to raise $10,000 this year from BCC employees. Contributions will fund student scholarships, campus programs, and projects like the Margin of Excellence Awards. Your support makes a difference to help maintain the high standards of excellence here at BCC!  Last year, more than 100 employees participated to raise over $9,000. You can mail in a pledge or drop it off in the Foundation office, A102. If you have questions or would like more information, please call Becky Baumgardner at 644-5074 or Steve Ross at 641-2282.

Commissioning the Artist
Arts 2000 Director and artist Cheryll Leo-Gwinn was just appointed by Governor Gary Locke as a commissioner to the Washington State Arts Commission. Cheryll, who will be representing the Eastside arts community, joins 23 other commissioners for a two-year term. The Washington State Arts Commission was established by the Washington State Legislature nearly 40 years ago to support the promotion, growth, and preservation of the arts within the state. Congratulations to Cheryll on this recent appointment to the Commission and for her continued dedication to the arts.

News From Athletics
The Athletics Department is gearing up for fall with the start of the intramural program. Flag football and volleyball leagues will begin the second week of October. You can join as a team or an individual. To sign up, call 641-2351. Athletics also extends a big thank you to all the staff and faculty who gave their time to raise money for athletic scholarships this summer. Volunteers who worked in the concession stand during the July 15-18 Mariners games at Safeco Field helped raise $3400 for the scholarship fund. Way to support your teams!

Recognizing Healthcare Professionals
BCC health sciences faculty and students are celebrating Sonographer Awareness Week from October 4-10. Sonography, which is often referred to as ultrasound, uses high frequency waves to generate detailed images of the body for medical diagnosis and treatment. BCC's Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology program was created in the 1970's and is one of only two accredited programs in the state. The rigorous program has an excellent job placement rate and BCC graduates earn nearly 100% success in their national certification exam. Look for sonography stickers and posters on campus next week - and help recognize the important contributions of these healthcare professionals.

Connecting With Other Colleges
Next week, BCC Information Technology (IT) programs will host faculty and administrators from Cerritos Community College near Los Angeles and Omaha's Metropolitan Community College. The visiting college representatives will be on campus to learn about BCC's IT programs, visit classes, and meet with BCC faculty and administrators. As part of the American Association of Community Colleges and Microsoft "Working Connections" program, BCC is one of five academic institutions who mentor other community colleges to improve their IT programs.

A Great Source of Information
Need a stamp right away? How about a reduced-price movie ticket for that new blockbuster coming out this fall? Stop by the Campus Information Center and Convenience Store in C106 on the main floor of the Student Union Building. The Information Center also offers student identification cards, bus schedules, low-cost typing and faxing services, and a variety of school supplies. The Information Center is open daily at 9:30am. For more information, call 641-2297.

Enhancing Our Library
The library just completed a major reconfiguration of the first floor stacks and study area to take advantage of an additional 4,000 square feet gained during last year's construction project. The reference collection, periodicals and ESL books have been relocated. New features include an elevator, new restrooms on the second floor, and more study space for students. Stop by D124 and see the library's new look!

The Student Experience
The ASBCC student government will sponsor a Club Fair to introduce students to several extracurricular campus organizations. Representatives from Model United Nations, Native American Culture Club, Child Care Center, Latino Pride de Mecha, and several other campus clubs will be in the Student Union Building from 10:30am - 1:00pm on October 5. Encourage your students to attend and get the most out of their BCC experience.

Halloween Festivities
Ready for tricks and treats? Institutional Advancement will sponsor a Halloween costume and office decorating contest. We're looking for a few good women and men to serve as judges for the office decorating contest. If you've got the Martha Stewart sensibilities and would like to judge, please e-mail Kara Witsoe or Lori Tiede. Stay tuned for more details on the festivities!

BCC Spotlight: Steve Ross

Bellevue Community College is getting a real Southwest flavor this year. Fresh from New Mexico, Steve Ross is BCC's new vice president of Institutional Advancement.

Steve started at the college in July. He guides the college's fundraising, marketing, and communications efforts and serves as the executive director of the BCC Foundation. He's currently focused on developing a fundraising campaign for a new child care facility on campus, increasing college support, and creating a BCC alumni association.

Before coming to BCC, Steve was the director of development at San Juan College in northern New Mexico. He previously served as the foundation executive director at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming and as the executive director of the California State University Alumni Association in Northridge, California. Steve has worked in higher education for 16 years, including 10 years in the community college system. He believes strongly in providing educational opportunities to students by generating private support for BCC.

"I want to educate people about our college," he says, "and let them know about the rewards that come from investing in education and in people."

When he's not in the office, Steve is quite a Renaissance man. He's an amateur thespian who has been active in community theater for many years. He sings and plays guitar, favoring flamenco and folk music. He's a sports enthusiast and has competed at master's level competitions in the shot put and discus events.

Stop by A102 this fall, and say hello to the newest member of the BCC team!
