Foundation Luncheon guests give $212,000 for BCC scholarships, programs
Guests at yesterday’s BCC Foundation luncheon contributed $212,552 for student scholarships and academic programming at BCC.
BCC Development Director Kara Talbott, who along with Development Associate Zorica Wacker and Foundation Board members Catherine Springman and Paul Swengle led the event planning and production, noted that, “with a little help from friends who couldn’t make the event, we have a great shot at meeting our overall goal of $225,000.”
Foundation student scholarship recipients Sergey Smirnov and Janelle Lewis spoke movingly about how the support of prior BCC Foundation donors had changed their lives, and Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna, a member of the BCC Foundation board, delivered a dynamic request for donor support.
About 500 guests attended the event, held at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.
Guest speaker Dr. Lee Hartwell, Nobel Laureate and head of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, delivered an impressive address describing how a California community college had once given him the second chance he needed.
President Jean Floten told guests about the college’s committed, innovative faculty, the quality of BCC’s programs and the impressive graduates BCC produces. Foundation President Mike Humphries thanked the luncheons’ sponsors – especially Univar, the premier sponsor – and described why support of BCC is so important now.
KING-TV news anchor Lori Matsukawa emceed the event, and more than 100 BCC students, faculty and staff took part, including the members of Celebration!, who set the tone with energetic and impressive vocal jazz. |

Students, faculty, Foundation contribute $13,000 to new Student Safety Net |
A gift of $5,000 from the Bellevue Community College Association of Higher Education (BCCAHE), the faculty labor organization, matched by a $5,000 grant from the BCC Foundation and supplemented by approximately $3,000 raised by students, has brought the total for the new Student Safety Net Fund to $13,000.
The concept for the fund, which will be used to help students in need, grew out of discussions among members of the Student Safety Net Committee, convened by Student Services Vice President Tom Pritchard. |
The BCCAHE's gift came from funds provided by the Washington Education Association, created by member dues, to be managed by the BCCAHE for community relations purposes.
"Since our community is most directly represented by BCC students, and since the purpose and mission of the union is to promote the greatest good, the BCCAHE Executive Council felt the Safety Net Fund would be an excellent way to get the greatest mileage from our gift," noted Life Science Instructor Rosemary Richardson, president of the BCCAHE.
A number of student clubs pitched in to raise money for the fund: The Black Student Union and the Muslim Student Association both held bake sales; the Chemistry Club sold fudge; the Desi Club offered henna hand painting; the International Student Association sold paper cranes and lucky stars they made themselves, as well as costume jewelry; the Student Science Association sold a book called “The Better World Shopping Guide.” Rotaract and the Muslim Student Association worked together to create the collection boxes distributed around campus. |
