Vicki Orrico named to BCC Board of Trustees

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire has appointed Vicki E. Orrico, of Bellevue, to a five-year term on the Bellevue Community College Board of Trustees.

Orrico replaces Ruthann Kurose, who has retired from the Board after 14 years of service.

Orrico practices law with Ogden Murphy Wallace, PLLC, in Seattle, where she represents local cities and towns and also serves business clients, primarily small- to mid-sized and women-owned businesses.

Quite active in the community, Orrico serves on the Bellevue Planning Commission, the Overlake Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and the Board of the University of Washington’s Center for Women and Democracy.

Orrico was honored with the Washington State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division Exemplary Service Award in 1998.

Orrico earned juris doctor and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

Food Services is growing greener!

When they say they're serving green coffee, it's a good thing.
    BCC Food Services, led by
Todd Juvrud, is now serving only Tully's 'fair-trade' coffee in the cafeteria and at the coffee stands in the R and L Building lobbies. And all coffee drinks are served in cups made of recycled, environmentally friendly materials.

"Fair trade" coffee is made from organically grown beans that are cultivated in forest shade (i.e., require no trees to be cut) by farmers who are paid a fair living wage.

BCC to be on video throughout India

Thanks to the efforts of International Student Programs Assistant Dean Cris Samia and his staff, a crew from the U.S. Commercial Service will be on campus later this month to create a videotape about BCC featuring some of our students from India, to be shown on Indian television and distributed in thousands of copies all over India. Only a handful of schools will be featured, so BCC's inclusion is a big feather in our cap.
ISP also has greatly expanded its online presence. At www.dalilusa.com (behind the 'Higher Education' link at the bottom) you can find information on BCC in both Turkish and Arabic.
More ISP news is available in their newsletter, at http://bellevuecollege.edu/isp/newsletter.html.

6,600 -- that's a lot of hours!

Once again BCC students have distinguished themselves by participating in Washington Campus Compact's Americorps Students in Service program.
Twenty-two BCC students participated last year, contributing more than 6,600 hours of community service in such activities as tutoring, mentoring, campus leadership, assisting new students on campus, and working with senior citizens, the homeless, ESL populations and immigrant services.
Each student earned $1,000 to go toward college education expenses.

“We Really Need to Talk!” Join in Courageous Conversations!

Seventy-eight hungry and courageous people attended the Courageous Conversation breakfast Sept. 21 to take part in structured conversations about race -- the new format for launching each weekly small-group Courageous Conversation this fall.
"The purpose of the structure is to provide an opportunity for everyone to participate and to provide time for talking, listening and reflection, to increase safety in talking about race and to balance styles of communication so that no one style dominates," said BCC Counselor Akemi Matsumoto, who led the session. "With this structure we believe we can include everyone who is interested in dialoguing about race in our weekly on-going conversations," she added.
Akemi also shared a moving poem -- “We Really Need to Talk!” written by a high school student on the East Coast -- to illustrate the purpose of Courageous Conversations (read the poem at http://bellevuecollege.edu/grapevine/images/We Need to Really Talk.pdf.

Everyone is welcome and invited to share their personal racial perspectives in any of the weekly Courageous Conversations groups. You will find the weekly schedule at http://bellevuecollege.edu/grapevine/images/CourageousConversationsFall2007schedule.pdf.
For more information contact Akemi at amatsumo@bcc.ctc.edu or X2202.

Don’t get caught in the snow! Sign up here for text, e-mail alerts
Be sure to sign up for BCC’s new emergency notification system, which uses e-mail and text messaging to alert subscribers (students, faculty and staff only) about emergency campus closures, such as for snowstorms.
You may also add your personal e-mail address to the list.
Sign up by simply logging in to the system one time, at http://bellevuecollege.edu/alerts/.

Opportunity Grants offer new form of assistance for low-income adults

With a $350,000 in funding from the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, BCC’s Workforce Education department has launched an Opportunity Grant program for limited-income students.
The Grants are geared towards adults seeking selected professional/technical certificates within the Business, Health Science, Computer Technology, and Education programs. These programs were identified through research by the State Board that indicated they were the most likely to lead to high-wage, high-demand jobs.
The grants cover up to 45 credits’ tuition and up to $1,000 in book vouchers.
Contact: Heather Morgan, X4045 or hmorgan@bcc.ctc.edu.

Please tell your students: Foundation Scholarship applications now available

Applications for BCC Foundation scholarships are now available for download at http://www.bellevuecollege.edu/scholarships/main_scholarships.htm.
Completed applications are due by noon Oct. 18th in the Foundation officer (A102).

Continuing Ed students redesign Red Cross field guide

Students in Continuing Education’s Project Management certificate program are redesigning the field guide used by the hundreds of Red Cross volunteers who set up emergency shelters.
The work is being done for the Seattle Chapter of the Red Cross but will be proposed for adoption nationally.
Continuing Education’s Director of Work-Related Programs Margaret Murphy noted the demographics on these students vary greatly from those of most for-credit classes. The students’ average age is 42, and many already have bachelor’s degrees.

BCC Foundation extends support to low-income Extreme Makeover-Home Edition family

BCC Foundation Executive Direct Gaynor Hills presented a certificate for $6,000 to Connie Chapin and her children, a low-income family in Kirkland who were selected for assistance by the Extreme Makeover-Home Edition TV program. The presentation was made after filming for the episode -- expected to air in January -- was completed. Read a transcript of the KOMO-TV news coverage at http://www.komotv.com/news/10236176.html.

Blog gives poor marks to BCC drinking fountain

Fight back! Post a reply here!

The blog "Drunk," which rates drinking fountains around town, has rated the fountain outside the BCC gymnasium a so-so 5.5 out of 10.
Though the blog gave the fountain an 8 for Stream ("High. Strong. Full. Fat. Real arc. Too bad the stream wasn't anywhere near cold.") and a 7 for Style ("The tall, spoon-shaped spout was a distinctive touch. And there's a good-looking push lever on the right side of the sink. It didn't offer much resistance, though"), it rated the fountain only a 5 on Hum ("I liked the strong white noise whoosh, but it seemed thin without the electric buzz underneath it that I want from an indoor fountain."), an even-poorer 4 on Taste ("Slightly tinny.") and a dismal 3 for being room temperature.
Disagree? Fight back by posting a response at http://hexmessage.blogspot.com/2007/08/drunk.html.
