BCC launches new program in Business Intelligence

BCC will launch a new degree and certificate program this fall in the field of Business Intelligence, a growing discipline within the realm of Information Technology. Business Intelligence (BI) focuses on identifying, acquiring and reporting the data needed to make informed business decisions. It has become a particularly essential function in large corporations because it provides the ability to manage growing volumes of complex data.

BI students at BCC may choose from three program options leading to successively higher levels of competency:  a BI Analyst certificate of accomplishment, a BI Developer certificate of achievement, and a BI track within the college’s Associate of Arts Computer Programming degree program. Preliminary certificate programs in Relational Database Analyst and Relational Database Developer also are available, providing building blocks for students who are interested in BI but do not yet have sufficient experience with databases.

The first course in the program, “Multi Dimensional Analysis I,” is being offered this fall in an unusual format designed for the convenience of working professionals and others with crowded schedules. Students will be given a CD containing all lectures and associated files so that attendance in class is not required. However, the instructor will be present during regularly scheduled optional sessions on campus to answer questions, help with hands-on exercises and lead discussions.

BCC wins NWAACC Tennis Championships

The BCC women’s tennis team finished their 2005 season in excellent form by sweeping the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship tournament in Spokane May 22. Led by coach Jason Chapman, BCC’s Bulldogs swept to victory in all nine divisions. The feat capped an undefeated, 9-0 season. In addition, coach Chapman was named Coach of the Year.

BCC Reads! book for '05-'06 announced

The Center for Liberal Arts has announced the selection of next year’s BCC Reads! book: The Botany of Desire: A Plants-Eye View of the World, by Michael Pollan. Exploring the reciprocal relationship between humans and the natural world, the book was selected in part because of its applicability to diverse disciplines across the curriculum—physical sciences, psychology, health and wellness, sociology, business, art and art history, philosophy, English, communications, journalism and media. The Center is again planning a scholarship contest in which five student winners will be selected during the 2006 Winter Quarter based on projects or essays related to The Botany of Desire.  The scholarship will cover full in-state tuition for Spring Quarter 2006. More information is available at http://www.bcc.ctc.edu/liberalarts/

Faculty Committee recommends book for summer reading

BCC’s Faculty Professional Development Committee recommends an addition to faculty’s summer reading: The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman. The Committee is planning tentatively to develop some of next year’s Faculty Professional Development activities around the theme of this book – although it in no way is intended to replace or compete with next year's BCC Reads! selection. Alan Moores, of “Booklist,” had this to say about The World is Flat: “ Although it may be catchy, the title of New York Times columnist Friedman's latest book needs explaining. "Flat" here means "level," as in the level playing field on which virtually any nation can now compete, thanks to the explosion of global telecommunications, including the Internet as well as the transfer of information from First World to Third--and back. There's also a leveling of hierarchies within organizations, thanks to the increasing democratization of information from sources such as the Web. Friedman cites 10 forces that have caused this "flattening," including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the emergence of Netscape as an Internet platform, workflow software, open sourcing, outsourcing, the streamlining of the supply chain, the organization of information on the Internet (Google, Yahoo), and the ubiquity of powerful personal telecommunications devices.” Please contact Kent Short (X2188) or Denise Johnson (X5143) for further information.

Looks like they had fun!

Earlier this month 17 weary BCC students returned from a week-long trip studying international business in Europe. The trip was part of Andrew Johnson’s “Advanced Studies in International Business” class.  While in Europe, students participated in team research projects comparing U.S. business practices with those of their European counterparts.  The students also visited historic attractions such as Windsor Castle, Oxford, Canterbury, the Louvre and the Champs-Elysees.

To help those who could not afford the $2,000 cost of the trip, students in the class formed one of BCC’s newest clubs – the International Business Exploration Club (IBEC) to raise funds. The club is open to all BCC students interested in researching and experiencing global business practices. IBEC implemented five different fund-raising projects and raised over $5,000.
