Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Federal and state regulations require that students receiving federal and state financial aid make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Institutions of higher education are allowed to establish their own polices to meet this regulation. Polices at each institution can be different, if you are transferring into BCC or transferring from BCC to a university review the college’s or university’s policy in the event that it is different.

I. The SAP Policy in Brief

  • Maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0.

  • Complete all the credits you register for or within the credit range.

  • Complete your program of study within 125% of your program requirements (credits).

II. Unsatisfactory Academic Progress (USAP)

Students failing to make academic progress may lose their financial aid eligibility or may be placed on probation. Your situation will determine what happens to your aid. The chart below can help you determine what may happen to your aid.

III. Transfer Students

Transfer Students: Students transferring mid-year must provide the Financial Aid Office with an academic transcript from the school from which they are transferring. Academic progress will be evaluated against the BCC financial aid office policy; all transfer credits are included in the academic review. Credits from prior schools that are accepted and applied toward a degree or certificate at BCC will be counted in the total maximum credit limit of eligibility for aid at BCC. Until an official Transfer Credit Evaluation is completed by the Evaluation Office at BCC, all prior credits are assumed to be transferable. On a case-by-case basis, the aid office may ask a transfer student for transcripts from all schools in order to evaluate academic performance against BCC’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.

Bachelor Degree Holders: Bachelor degree holders might be considered for financial aid (Stafford loan and work-study) on a case-by-case basis, pending credit evaluation. Students who have a Bachelors degree and are returning to BCC for an Associate degree or a certificate must provide the Financial Aid Office with an academic transcript from prior schools. Academic progress will be evaluated against the BCC financial aid office policy; all transfer credits are included in the academic review. Credits from the Bachelors program must be evaluated by an academic advisor for transferability to the program or degree at BCC.

IV. Regaining Eligibility for Financial Aid

If you have lost your financial aid eligibility you may be able to regain it by filing an Appeal for Financial Aid Reinstatement. On the Appeal form you have two options for filing; you can cite mitigating circumstances, such as an illness or an accident, and provide the appropriate documentation, or you can file an appeal after enrolling for a quarter taking at least five credits which apply to your program of study, paying your own tuition, and completing the quarter having achieved academic progress as stipulated in BCC’s policy.

Follow the directions on the form carefully.  Appeals submitted to this office without the appropriate documentation are automatically denied.

If you have two quarters of no academic progress you may lose your eligibility for financial aid permanently at BCC. Completing additional quarters and paying your own tuition may not re-gain your eligibility for aid.

V. Repayments

If you owe a repayment to institutional, federal, or state funds filing an Appeal for Financial Aid Reinstatement will not remove the repayment.
