English Challenge Test

If you have taken the COMPASS English assessment test and your placement falls into a “borderline” category, you may take the English Challenge Test to receive a higher placement. The test requires you to read a short article and write an essay in response to a prompt about the article.

Testing Policy

  • You must first take the COMPASS English test and have a placement of at least English 070 to be eligible to take the Challenge Test.
  • The test is offered on computer. The total time allowed is 120 minutes (2 hours).
  • You may take the Challenge Test once every other quarter.
  • The placement result is good for two years.
  • If you have completed a three-credit English 101 from a college or university that is on a quarter system, you may take this test for placement into English 201, 235, or 271. However, you must have your English course evaluated via the Online Prerequisite Check process before signing up for the test.

How to Register for the Test

Online pre-registration is required. There is no registration by phone or in person. Registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis. Registration closes two days prior to the test day or when it is full.

Make sure to register for a day and time that you can come to. The registration fee is NON-REFUNDABLE even if you are unable to take the test. If you need to change your test day, you have to register for another session with a new fee.

  • Step 1: View the test schedule below.
  • Step 2: Select the register link of the day that works for you.  
  • Step 3: Pay for the fee - After you have submitted the registration, the Assessment Office will confirm your eligibility and email you a link for the Web Payment website. Pay the fee promptly to secure your seat.

Below is the testing schedule for Fall Quarter. Each session is limited to 30 students. Be sure to register early.

Test Day

On the test day, you must arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time. Those arriving late will NOT be allowed to test.  

I. What To Bring On Test Day

  • Bring a valid photo identification (you will not be able to test without a picture ID).
  • Bring your BC Student ID number.

II. Important Regulations

  • Dictionary use is allowed, but cell phones or any device with camera features are prohibited. .
  • All the tests are done on computer. The total time allowed is 120 minutes. Scratch paper and pencils will be provided by the testing center.
  • Recording the exam or reproducing it is strictly prohibited.
  • No bags or back packs are allowed in the testing room. Lockers are available if you need to store your personal items. You may also leave your belongings in your car or with your family or friends.
  • No drinks or food are allowed in the testing room.
  • No hats, coats or jackets that have pockets are allowed in the testing room.
  • No breaks are allowed during the test.
  • Cell phone use is prohibited. If your phone makes any noise, or if you are seen using it at any time, you will be dismissed immediately and your test will be canceled. This policy also applies to any other prohibited digital and/or electronic devices such as BlackBerrys, CD players, pagers, PDAs, cameras, and other photographic equipment and separate timers of any kind.

Inclement Weather and Emergency

Check the college homepage for campus closure due to inclement weather or any emergency. If the college campus is closed, no test will be available. You will be re-scheduled or refunded. If conditions are dangerous, do not attempt to travel to the test center. Also check this website for updated test schedule.
