Searching for Information about a Person or Family

Information on a person or family is probably the most commonly requested data from these pages. When the index was being created, special attention was given towards the inclusion of relevant names that were not contained in the headline. These names are found in the index after the headline as Lastname, Firstname(s) and are enclosed in parentheses.

Headline ONLY CUB MISTRESS IN U.S. TO RELINQUISH POSITION (ESTY, MAE BELLE)
Subject ORGANIZATIONS, CHILDREN
Date 4/4/35
Page 1

If the name is contained in the headline it will appear as it was printed. Sometimes, the entire name is shown.

Headline HARRY FRENCH RECALLS EARLY DAYS ON EASTSIDE
Subject HISTORY, LOCAL
Date 4/23/31
Page 1

Since headlines are meant to be terse, usually only a last name is shown. Occasionally a title or initials may accompany it.

Headline 3.2 BEER ORDINANCE CAUSES MAYOR NEWBERRY'S RESIGNATION
Category GOVERNMENT, CITY
Date 4/20/33
Page 1

Since engagements, weddings and obituaries were the categories that contained the most entries, it was decided early on to not include the headline and only include the names. Weddings and engagements list the bride's full name, followed by the groom's.

Headline GLADYS BOINK, HARRY WALTERS
Subject WEDDINGS
Date 8/28/19
Page 1

Obituaries are listed with the deceased's last name, followed by the first (and sometimes middle) name.

Headline FRENCH, HARRY D
Subject OBITUARIES
Date 10/21/37
Page 1

As you can see from the examples, a name like John Smith may show up as "Smith, John", "J Smith", "Smith, J" or "Dr. Smith". The best method of searching on a name is to search under Headline for only the last name, and then scan the output. Even a popular name like Smith shows up in only a few hundred entries and eyeing the list for John or J won't take too much time.
