INDES 142 Textiles Interior Materials & Sources • 5 Cr.

Introduces properties and applications for textiles and various other surface materials that can be selected, specified, installed, and maintained in an interior environment. Topics include soft and hard materials for flooring, walls, ceilings, and upholstery, as well as equipment, applications, millwork, and cabinetry. Product sources and specifications are covered along with how to measure, correctly install and maintain the various materials. Prerequisite: INDES 140 with a C- or better.

Outcomes:

After completing this class, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of major fibers by applying information about fibers and their properties to selection for appropriate end uses, by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects.
  • Cite guidelines/criteria of varied pieces of federal legislation as they apply to interior materials, products and finishes by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects.
  • Demonstrate appropriate selection of interior materials, products and finishes based on their properties and performance criteria, by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sources for interior materials, products and finishes by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of installation methods of interior materials, products and finishes (for example, carpet, resilient flooring, wall covering) by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of material maintenance requirements, by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of sustainable resources, and environmental issues such as VOCs and LEED by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact that interior materials, products and finishes have on health, welfare and safety of end users, by successfully completing exam questions and/or projects.
