Description:
Students increase their communication skills by viewing, discussing and thinking critically about films. Prerequisite: Acceptance to the ELI program.
Outcomes:
After completing this class, students should be able to:
- Learning
- Follow dialogue in a film
- Use visual and aural non-linguistic cues to understand meaning
- Identify plot, conflict, and theme
- Identify setting and its relevance to the film—time, place
- Identify how style plays a part in a viewer’s response to a film (music, mood, symbolism, foreshadowing, etc.)
- Understand vocabulary in context
- Incorporate film vocabulary and idioms in class discussions and beyond
- Respond appropriately to questions about a film
- Summarize the plot
- Express opinions using relevant support
- Expand on content expressed in the films
- Generate ideas independently
- Recognize their own biases and values through reflection
- Recognize and respect different perspectives on various issues
