Business Leadership Club

The BLC is an extensive learning community that spans BC business students, recent alum in four-year colleges, and alum in major enterprises. Its mission is to enhance the curriculum of our business programs, foster engagement and collaboration between students, and support student success in academia and life.

The BLC grew out of the highly successful Connect to the Future Conference in 2004, an event driven by the Business Division and serviced by business students who served as student ambassadors. BLC events drew close to 800 students in the 2005/6 school year, over 2500 students in 2006/7, over 1000 in both 2007/8 and 2008/9 academic years.

In academic year 2008-9, the BLC held 10 events, brought 15 business professionals (including former Starbucks CEO, Jim Donald), and 40 alum on our campus reaching over 1000 students. We ran three writing assessment prep sessions with Robin Jeffers to increase the admissions to the UW business schools. Career exploration was not the only mission of the club. The BLC-initiated Walk and Roll for Hope and Change raised over $3300 for the student safety fund and Hopelink.

Business Transfer instructors Rich Bratz, Leslie Lum and tutor Phil Lauria were part of the first contingent of over 25 to our sister college, the Shanghai Business School, in August and September 2008. The ongoing exchange will continue with students and faculty from SBS planning to visit BC in the 2009-10 academic year.

The academic year started with a blast as alum came back to talk to students about how to get internships. Over 70 students and alum networked on how to get the best internships.

Hiring managers from Amazon, Boeing, Costco, Microsoft and Cap Gemini give fabulous tips on how to get a good job in a tough market. Over 140 students attended the two sessions.

BC alum from Boeing, KPMG, Alaska Air, NGenera, Prometheus Energy and the Foster School give great ideas about how to network and evaluate job offers. It is incredible to see how polished and professional they have become as they become hiring managers for their companies.

BLC officer Michelle Liu arranged three Writing Assessment training sessions for about 75 students applying to the UW business schools. Robin Jeffers conducted the sessions which gave feedback on how to improve writing scores. The WSA accounts for 35% of the admission criteria to UW business schools.

Professor Stella Williams from Nigeria talks to 90 students about a global initiative linking China, Africa and the US to create a curriculum using the Stockholm Environment Institute's ecological footprint. Professor Williams has already recruited three African universities to be part of the initiative along with the Shanghai Business School.

Jim Donald, former CEO of Starbucks, tells students his "Lessons from Retail" to an overflow crowd of 140 students. Jim was amazed at the high calibre of the students here at BC.

Michael Brown and JD Smith (business law faculty) talk to 100 students about civil rights and the law during Identities Week.

Kate Constanza of MulvannyG2 spoke about green markets on Earthweek. Over 120 students listened to how industry will change as we become more green.

Close to 200 people bought tickets and over 30 people volunteered to help with the massive effort it took to mount the first Walk and Roll for change and hope. Angie Dodge and Sam Pierce were pivotal to the success of this great event.

Margie Biliske, former accounting instructor, arranged for students and faculty to visit the Microsoft office and house of the future. It was a thrilling journey into the possibilities that new innovations will bring.

The Washington Society of CPAs arranges for 32 students to do an accounting job shadow at local CPA firms. This year faculty Francisco Ebreo took the students to Clark Nuber to get first-hand experience on what it is like to be an accountant.
