In the first set, the Bulldogs came out motivated, focused and gnawed their way to a 25-13 win, using tenacious defense and timely, perfectly placed hitting by sophomore Opposite Hitter Danielle Rehm. She would end the night with 11 kills. In the second set, the momentum shifted to Shoreline, as they took an early lead. The Bulldogs, who never showed signs of panic, were able to fight back and keep the score close. Bellevue called timeout trailing 20-22, but was able to re-focus, and quickly turn the tide on the Dolphins, scoring the next 5 points to take the set 25-22, none more emphatic than a stuff block by freshman MB Lisa Schouten to bring the Bulldogs to set point. Set three remained close all the way through, however BC made a late 4-point run off of key kills by sophomore MB Hannah Fox and the powerful blocking of Schouten, who ended up with 5 blocks and 8 kills, while Fox contributed 5 kills. Throughout the match, the team was determined on defense, with sophomores Libero Patti Reeves tallying 21 digs and OH Savannah Feist chipping in with 10 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore MB Hannah Fox had a combined 10 kills and 13 blocks, while Fujimoto tallied 53 assists for both matches. After a slow start, the Bulldogs took the first set 25-22, then went on to win the match 3-0, thus being guaranteed a chance at the tournament championship. The championship match pitted the Bulldogs against the Sasquatch of Spokane in a re-match of the Bellevue Crossover Tournament Championship. The real story of the weekend came in set one as the Bulldogs struggled early, falling behind 3-15. However, the team began to turn things around, rattled off 5 consecutive points on two separate occasions to pull within 2 points. After Spokane called their second timeout of the match, the Bulldogs continued to roll, and tied the score at 18-18. Battling back, the Bulldogs won the set 25-23, capping off a seemingly insurmountable comeback. In the second set, BC continued to build momentum as they took the set in dominant fashion, 25-13, but Spokane rallied to win the third set 25-20, giving BC their only set loss of the weekend. After a back and forth battle where each team had missed opportunities, the Bellevue win was finally secured by a kill from freshman MB Schouten. Both MB’s came up big for BC in the end, as Fox set up the team with game-point three times, and had a big block to tie the score at 26-26. Danielle Rehm was also an important factor, racking up 13 kills for the match (5 in set 4). Fujimoto posted a career-high 64 assists. Good job, Bulldogs! -- contributed by Andrew McAllister, Volleyball Assistant Coach VOLLEYBALL HAMMERING ‘EM HOME On Wednesday, Oct. 7, Bulldog Volleyball traveled to Skagit Valley College in an NWAACC North Division showdown. The Bulldogs were coming off consecutive home victories and looking for a third straight win. After Bellevue took the first set 25-22, SVC fought back to win the second set 25-17. The loss motivated and re-focused the Bulldogs, and behind the dominant blocking of sophomore Hannah Fox and the tenacious digging of sophomores Savannah Feist and Patti Reeves, the Bulldogs were able to regain the advantage and take set three 25-10. In the fourth set, Skagit was unable to contain the aggressive Bulldog attackers. BC took the set 25-21, and improved to 3-1 in NWAACC North Division play. Libero Reeves had 25 digs, while Feist had 17 kills and 20 digs. The team also got much-needed support from Fox, who had only 5 kills, but contributed with a .454 hitting percentage and 8 blocks. Friday evening, Oct. 9, at home, the Bulldogs faced off against Everett CC, seeking a fourth consecutive win and looking to move into a tie for second place in the North Division. The Bulldogs came out fired up and ready to defend their home court in their second NWAACC North contest of the season. BC took sets one and two 25-14 and 25-18 behind strong defensive play and aggressive serving. The Tritons would not go down easily as they came back to win the third set 25-22. The Bulldogs, however, were able to re-group and take the fourth set 25-23, ensuring a victory against their cross-town rival. Sophomore opposite hitter Danielle Rehm led the Bulldogs with 13 kills. Freshman outside hitter Heidi Bell contributed with 11 kills, and freshman setter Veronica Wetzel led the team with 41 assists and 5 aces. Two days later, Bellevue took on Olympic College. The Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders as they swept the match 25-11, 25-12, and 25-6. The team improved to 2-1 in NWAACC North play (11-5 overall). Sophomore captain Savannah Feist took advantage of the Rangers’ inability to receive serve, and at one time in the third game held serve for 14 consecutive points. Feist led the team with 8 aces and 11 kills. Rehm chipped in with 10 kills, while sophomore co-captain Patti Reeves contributed with 23 digs. Bellevue (2-1, 11-5) travels north Weds., Oct. 7, to Mount Vernon to take on Skagit Valley College (2-1, 6-4). Then, the Bulldogs return to BC to host Everett (0-4, 0-12) this Friday, Oct. 10. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. BULLDOGS DROP HEARTBREAKER TO SHORELINE Bulldogs Volleyball traveled to face off against NWAACC North Division rival Shoreline on Friday, Sept. 25. The two teams had met the previous weekend in the Bellevue Crossover Tournament semi-final, in which the Bulldogs were victorious in straight sets. This night, however, did not go according to Bellevue’s plan as the tenacious Dolphins came out fired up and ready to defend their home court. Behind some aggressive hitting and defense, Shoreline took the first set 28-26. The second faired no better for the Bulldogs, as again Shoreline stepped up their play and defeated Bellevue 25-23. The Bulldogs showed some signs of life in the third set, rallying with tough serving and relentless defense to take the set 25-21. But in the end, trailing 2 sets to 1 was too much for BC, as they dropped the fourth set by another close score of 25-23. Sophomore co-captain Savannah Feist (Kentwood) led the Bulldogs in kills with 13, and also posted 17 digs, while fellow co-captain Patti Reeves (Archbishop Murphy) tallied 24 digs and 3 aces. Freshman setter Veronica Wetzel (Auburn Riverside) contributed with 37 assists. Bellevue (9-5, 0-1) has two home matches this week as they host Edmonds (9-12, 0-2) on Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Olympic (1-20, 1-1) Friday, Oct. 2. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in the BC Gym. BC BULLDOGS WIN VOLLEYBALL CROSSOVER TOURNAMENT Bellevue College Volleyball hosted the NWAACC Crossover Tournament September 18-19. On Friday, the Bulldogs jumped right in, nipping Mt. Hood - a traditional NWAACC volleyball powerhouse - in the first match in straight sets, but then dropped the next match to Treasure Valley. The Bulldogs wrapped up the first day of play beating Edmonds CC in straight sets, then losing in three to Spokane. In the first round of the playoffs on Saturday, the Bulldogs again faced off against Mt. Hood and proved their dominance by taking the win in straight sets. In the semifinals, BC faced off against Shoreline. The Bulldogs took the first set, and then clawed their way to victory in the second set, ensuring a shot at the tournament championship. The championship match pitted the Bulldogs in a rematch with Spokane. Early on BC struggled, but rallied from 6 points down late in the set to take the first set. The second set however, Spokane demonstrated their tenacity and beat BC by a handy margin. The third set proved to be gut-check time for the Bulldogs. Falling behind in the deciding set 4-8, the team showed their never-say-die attitude and fought back to tie the set at 9-9 behind the strong serving and defense of co-captain sophomore Patti Reeves (Archbishop Murphy). After the ensuing side out, sophomore Savannah Feist (Kentwood) stepped to the service line. Following a tough serve and timely kill by BC freshman Heidi Bell (Auburn Riverside), the team took a 3-point lead at 12-9, which they would never relinquish. BC went on to win the set 15-10, giving them their second Crossover Championship in four years. All-Tournament Team selections included BC’s Savannah Feist as Tournament MVP, and Patti Reeves and Heidi Bell. Friday, Sept. 25, the Bulldogs travel to take on Shoreline at 7 p.m. Bulldogs Add Final Two to Roster Bellevue College Volleyball welcomes its final two athletes to the 2009 team, Alina Ross and Marissa Fujimoto. Alina played at Hazen High School and Northwest Jrs VBC for the past few years where she was a middle blocker. “Alina is giant,” says head coach Kim Culliton, “she stands at over 6’0” with a dominating stature. She is going to add great height to the team, and I know from personal experience that she is very coachable. She will fit this team well, and I am excited to have Alina aboard.” Marissa Fujimoto joins the team after playing four years at Kentridge High School and at Club Wahine. “Marissa is extremely quick footed, which is a valuable trait in a setter.” Says Culliton, “She will better the team and is well liked by all. I know she will work hard and push herself thusly pushing her teammates at the same time. I am very glad that Marissa has decided to join the team late in the signing season.” With Ross and Fujimoto added, the 2009 squad sits at 14 active players. “We have some depth. We have high quality players who are all like-minded,” says Culliton. “I have been excited to start every season since I began coaching, and this year is no exception. I anticipate great things from this group, and I know that they expect nothing but greatness from themselves.” Bulldogs Add Another For '09 Season Bellevue College welcomes its newest member of the 2009 Volleyball team, Desiree (Dez) Diego. Dez is a Bothell High School graduate and has played for the successful Rain City Volleyball Club. “Dez will step in as a defensive specialist for the team,” said head coach Kim Culliton, “What struck me about Dez first was the fight in her. She is an intense player with a ‘you never know until you go for it’ mentality. Her absolute resolve to get a touch on every single ball is impressive and will be helpful to the future of the team.” Added to an already impressive 2009 squad, Dez is one of four defensive specialists. “They will all be fighting for their spot on the court,” said Culliton, “the cream will rise to the top making this season spectacular.” The 2009 preseason starts August 14th with the first matches September 1st at Linn Benton (Albany, Oregon). Please check back regularly for updates. Two New Recruits Sign For '09 Season Bellevue College Volleyball is pleased to announce the signing of two more stand-out athletes. Lisa Schouten of Sumner and Anastazia (Stazi) Edmonds of Auburn Riverside are the latest additions to the 2009 team. Schouten was a contributing member of the stellar Sumner High School
team this past season averaging 10 kills and 4 blocks per game as a
middle blocker. Standing at 6’0”, she is to be a force to reckon with at
the net. “Lisa is an impressive player,” says Head Coach Kim Culliton.“She has great footwork, and is aggressive at the net. She is also a
great backrow player, which is something you don’t see often in middle
blockers. She will be an immediate contributor to the 2009 squad, Stazi Edmonds was a participant in the Auburn Riverside program in 2007. Due to an injury, she was unable to play in 2008. Stazi is back playing with her future teammate, Lisa, on the Lake Tapps VBC 18’s team. “Stazi is a great utility player,” says Culliton. “She is playing middle blocker for the Lake Tapps team, but she will serve primarily as a DS for us here at Bellevue. It is very nice to know that you have a utility player who is confident in handling any position she is needed for. She is a very naturally talented volleyball player.” The 2009 Bellevue College team is getting ready for the grueling preseason preparing for their trek to the NWAACC Championship tournament in November. Make sure to check back often for updates on the team. The schedule will be posted soon! Volleyball Adds Two More for '09 Season Bellevue College Volleyball welcomes its newest members of the 2009 season, Dakota Bradley of Archbishop Murphy High School and 5’10” Heidi Bell of Auburn Riverside High School. Bradley will add a lot of heart to the defensive side of Bellevue’s game and Bell will add an aggressive attack to the already strong outside hitter position. “Dakota is a natural in the DS position,” says Head Coach Kim Culliton, “She reads the offense well, and pursues every ball. She is a very talented volleyball player, yet one of her best talents is her mental toughness.” Bradley is an honorable mention award winner on her 2008 Cascade Conference co-championship team where she anchored the team as the libero. Bradley has received much praise from coaches, past teammates, and even newspaper reporters. Jennifer Buchanan, of The Herald in Everett, was quoted writing “[Dakota Bradley is] one of the more inspiring student-athletes I’ve ever interviewed.” “Heidi is an extremely aggressive and powerful in the outside hitter position,” Culliton says, “she is going to be very exciting to watch this year – she averaged 12 kills per game in her high school career. She is also a great defensive player, averaging almost 15 digs per game. Very impressive.” Bell was also awarded second team all league honors in the highly competitive SPSL 4A League. There is no doubt Dakota and Heidi will add to the already focused 2009 team, and Bellevue College is ecstatic to have athletes with such magnitude on the team. Bellevue Lands First Two Commitments for '09 Squad The Bellevue Volleyball program is pleased to announce its first two signees to its 2009 team. Standout setter, Veronica Wetzel of Auburn Riverside and universally talented Jenessa Reid of West Valley in Yakima join the Bulldogs in their quest for a Championship season in ’09. 5’10” Veronica Wetzel will step in to an important role, helping lead the team from the setting position. Veronica averaged over 20 assists per game in her senior high school season – splitting time with another setter. On her club team, she serves over 90% and averages over 28 assists per game. “A key job for the setter is to make her attackers better, and she is the definition of that. She also adds some great height, which will be key on defense,” Says Head Coach Kim Culliton, “She is one of the most talented all around setters I have seen – she has limitless potential - and is a key ingredient for the 2009 season.” Veronica’s club coach Jon Killingbeck adds, "One of best parts of Veronica's game is the fact that you can ask her to fix something during a time out and she does it right away. Veronica is one of the best setters I have worked with at any level." The Bulldog Volleyball team is excited to add such a talented player to its 2009 roster. Jenessa Reid is the third West Valley athlete to join the Bellevue team in 4 years. West Valley continues to grow and improve, and Jenessa is evidence of that. At 5’8”, Jenessa will serve primarily as a utility player, as she is talented in all positions. For her high school team, she split time hitting as an outside hitter/right side hitter and a setter; a difficult task to master both skills. Her stats support her talent, as she had 143 kills for the season, 115 assists, 33 aces, 166 digs, and passed a 2.0 %. “Jenessa impressed me a lot when she came to open gym. I had seen her before in camps and club, I knew her talent, yet it seems she improves almost every day. She has great hops and really gets on top of the ball well - she will challenge our outside hitters for a top spot and will be an important member of the 2009 season – I feel confident in her abilities in every position,” said Coach Culliton, “She also meshed very well with the teammates, which is very important.” Head West Valley Coach Katie Orgill has said, “I am really excited for Jenessa. Her hard work and commitment has paid off. She has improved every year making huge contributions to the team, and being a positive leader. She will be a great addition to the Bellevue squad in any spot.” We are pleased to have such a great all-around player added to the 2009 roster. Bellevue continues to get commitments for the 2009 roster. Please check back regularly for updates! |
