SORENSON MOVES ON, LOWE TABBED AS NEW COACH
June 22, 2007

After taking the BCC Women's Basketball team from the bottom of the league to the NWAACC Championship Game in just three seasons, head coach Cheryl Sorenson has decided to move on, accepting an assistant coaching position at Eastern Washington University.  Sorenson, 27, guided the Bulldogs to back to back Northern Region Championships, highlighted by last season's 25-6 team that advanced all the way to the NWAACC title game.  After struggling to a 4-22 finish in her first season, Sorenson's teams tied for the regional title in the NWAACC's Northern Region in both2005 and 2006.

"Cheryl has done a tremendous job building the women's basketball program into a championship contender, and she did so in a span of just three seasons", said BCC Athletic Director Bill O'Connor.  "It was only a matter of time before she was offered an opportunity to move up.  We are grateful to have had her here the past three years, and wish her only the best in her move to Eastern Washington."

O'Connor didn't have to look far to find an ideal successor for Sorenson, promoting Assistant Coach Steve Lowe.  "Steve has had an instrumental role in the recent success of women's basketball", said O'Connor.  "He knows what it takes to be successful at our level, and is more than qualified.  Our program is in good hands."

Lowe, 30, is a 2001 graduate of Central Washington University, where he majored in Special Education with a minor in Physical Education and he recieved his Masters of Technology in June 2006.  Born and raised in Richland, Washington, Lowe has experience coaching basketball at Richland High School, as well as Lake Washington High School, where he was the head girls basketball coach for the 2003-04 season.  He was hired along with Sorenson in 2004, and has served as a lead assistant coach for the past three seasons.

Lowe has announced the hiring of Paulette Martin as his assistant coach.  A well known coaching presence in the area, Martin is familiar with the NWAACC, having served as an assistant coach at Shoreline Community College.  A 1990 graduate of Indiana University and Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), Martin is a member of her alma mater's Athletic Hall of Fame.  She ranks in IUPUI's top ten in several statistical categories, including career scoring average, field goals made, field goals attempted, and field goal percentage.

The Women's Basketball season begins in earnest when practice starts on October 15.
