On Wednesday, Jan. 9, the Bellevue Bulldogs women’s basketball team traveled to Shoreline CC to face the Dolphins. The game started out slow for the Bulldogs, but the first half ended with a flurry of baskets and defensive stops giving Bellevue a commanding 41-15 lead going in at the break. The Bulldogs were able to hold the Dolphins to 26.9% shooting from the floor and really limit their opportunities. In the second half, the Bulldogs kept up the defensive pressure, and created 28 turnovers on 17 steals while fouling only nine times total for the game. The final score put the Bulldogs on top 79-28. “We played good, hard, clean defense throughout the game, which can be hard when you’re up big at the half,” said Bellevue assistant coach Angela Jensen. Bulldogs were led in scoring by four players in double figures: Demarea Caples, 16 points; Jori Hall, 15; Airashay Rogers, 10; Chanel
Cambronero, 12. “An important factor was Bellevue’s free-throw shooting,” said Jensen, “Shoreline committed 20 fouls for the game and we were able to convert that into 23 points on 23/32 shooting from the charity stripe.”
Then, on Saturday, Jan. 12, Bellevue was on the road again, this time to Everett. In the first half the teams traded baskets, with little defense played by either the Bulldogs or Trojans. At the half the Bulldogs held a slim lead of 35-31. The second half proved to be more of the same, with the Bulldogs once again slightly out-scoring their opponent and finishing off with a 66-59 road win. “All road wins are good wins,” said Jensen, “but we certainly didn’t have our best stuff tonight.” The Bulldogs were led by Caples with 23 points and nine rebounds. Hall contributed nine points, while Rogers and Brenna Anderson each added eight. Anderson also contributed seven rebounds.
Next up, the Bulldogs (3-0, 10-6) host the Edmonds Tritons (0-3, 4-10) on Wednesday, Jan. 16, tip-off at 5:30 p.m. Then, the Bulldogs once again hit the road to play North Region number one Whatcom (currently 3-0, 10-5) on Saturday, Jan. 19, with a 4:00 p.m. start time in Bellingham.
