MEN’S BASKETBALL WINS THE NORTH The Bulldogs took on both teams trailing them in the standings this past week and won both games to separate themselves from the field. Against Olympic (10-4) on February 18, the Bulldogs pulled out a 68-64 victory behind 20 points from Sam Cartmell and 14 points from Rahiti Marere. It was the strong team defense that proved to be the difference in this game. The Bulldogs held the Rangers to just 24 first-half points and when they need a key stop in the second half, the Builldogs were able to get it done defensively. The Bulldogs travel to Bellingham on February 25 to take on Whatcom CC (9-5), then host Seattle CC (7-7) February 28 in the Bulldogs’ season finale. The Bellevue sophomores and their families will be recognized before the game begins at BCC Gymnasium. Tip-off is 7:00pm. MEN’S BASKETBALL IN 1ST PLACE The BCC men’s basketball team (10-2 in league; 21-4 overall) pushed their winning streak to seven in a row with a victory against Shoreline (0-12) 74-48. The Bulldogs are in first place in the tough North Division of the NWAACC with a half game lead over both Olympic and Skagit who they will face this week. In the game against Shoreline the Bulldogs were able to turn up the pressure and force Shoreline to play faster then they wanted to and force Shoreline into 26 turnovers and held them to 16/50 (32%) from the field shooting on their way to a convincing win. David Maddock led all BCC scorers with 13 points and Blake Pankow chipped in with 10 points as well. All 13 players played for the Bulldogs and 12 of those players scored for another very balanced attack. This week will be a big challenge for the Bulldogs as they take on the two teams that are just a half game behind them in the North Division race for first. With the NWAACC playoffs just four games away the Bulldogs end their season playing four teams that are all still battling for playoff spots. The Bulldogs will host Olympic College (10-3) February 18 at BCC Gymnasium and will travel to Mt Vernon on February 21 to take on Skagit Valley College (10-3) both tipoffs at 7:00pm. MEN’S BASKETBALL MAKE IT FOUR IN A ROW
February 3, 2009 The BCC men’s basketball team (7-2 in league; 18-4 overall) pushed their winning streak to four in a row with victories at Seattle CC (4-4) 78-70 and at home against Everett CC (4-5) 74-62 this past week. The Bulldogs are now in second place in the tough North Division of the NWAACC and just one game behind league leader Olympic College. In both of their wins this past week the Bulldogs leaned on their defense in the second half of the contests to make the difference. Against Seattle, the Bulldogs turned up the defensive intensity in the last five minutes of the game to pretty much shut down the Storm’s comeback attempt. In the win against Everett, the Bulldogs played unbelievable defense for the first 17 minutes of the second half to allow the high-scoring Trojans only 18pts in that 17 minute span. The Bulldogs have had a balanced offensive attack all season long with a number of different players stepping up each game and this past week was no different. Against Seattle all 11 players who played scored and were led by the 16pts from Sam Cartmell and 11pts from Rahiti Marere. Against Everett, 11 of the 13 players who played scored and were led by 12pts from Marere and 10pts from Curron Singleton. The Bulldogs travel to Edmonds February 4 against Edmonds Tritons (1-8), and on February 7 travel to Port Angeles against the Peninsula Pirates (5-4) both are 7:00pm tip-offs. MEN’S BASKETBALL WINS TWO January 26, 2009 The BCC men’s basketball team (5-2 in league; 16-4 overall) got back on the winning track by taking two tough-fought home games this past week. January 21 the Bulldogs hosted Skagit Valley Cardinals (4-3) and came away with a 71-60 victory. On January 24, the Bulldogs hosted Whatcom Orcas (3-4) for what turned out to be an exciting, offensive explosion on the part of the Bulldogs with a final score of 100-93. Spectators in the stands and fans who watched it live on BCC Channel 28 certainly got their money’s worth! The secret this past week to the Bulldogs two victories is due to the fact they got back to playing harder then their opponent and playing together on offense. Again, the Bulldogs have been led by a balanced scoring attack all year long and this weekend was no different . In the contest against Skagit, the Bulldogs had four players in double figures, led by Curron Singleton’s 21pts, then against Whatcom, five players hit double digits led by Sam Cartmell’s 19pts. The Bulldogs will travel to North Seattle January 28 against Seattle Storm (4-3), and on January 31 the Everett Trojans (4-3) come to BCC with this game being televised on the BCC Channel 28, both are 7:00pm tip-offs. MEN’S BASKETBALL LOOKING TO KEEP ROLLING The BCC men’s basketball team (2-1 in league & 13-3 overall) ended their preseason schedule at 11-2 and a #4 overall ranking in the most recent NWAACC Poll. The Bulldogs lone two losses were to #3 ranked Yakima CC at Yakima in overtime by three points and the second loss came to #2 ranked Tacoma CC in the Championship game of the Southwest Oregon Crossover Tournament by six points. The Bulldogs also stumbled out of the gate in 2009 by losing their first game at Everett 75-77, but they too bounced back with back-to-back wins against Edmonds CC 64-46 and Peninsula College 75-60 to run their record to 2-1 in the North Division and a third place tie. The men’s team is also led by a balanced attack as 13 different players have played this season, with two averaging in double figures and five different players averaging six or more points per game. The Bulldogs are also second in all of NWAACC in team defense by only allowing 62.6 points per game while averaging 77.9 points per game on offense. The Bulldogs will go on the road this week to face Shoreline CC (0-2) January 14 at 7:00pm. The Bulldogs were led all weekend by a another balanced scoring attack. Sophomore Sam Cartmell was selected to the All-Tournament Team, and sophomore Rahiti Marere was designated the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Bulldogs go on the road this weekend to take on the Grays Harbor Chokers Saturday, Dec. 6, at 4:00pm in Aberdeen. MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WINNING THE BULLDOG CLASSIC The BCC men’s basketball team kicked off their season with a bang winning the 1st Annual Bulldog Classic. The Bulldogs (3-0) opened the tournament with a solid win over Portland CC 81-61, and then really got things rolling in their semifinal game against Wenatchee Valley winning 99-60. The Championship game on Sunday matched the Bulldogs against last year’s NWAACC Champions, the Yakima Valley Yaks. Once again the Bulldog defense proved to be too much as BCC won the championship game 77-61. The Bulldogs were led all weekend by a balanced scoring attack. Sophomore Rahiti Marere was selected to the All-Tournament Team, and sophomore Sam Cartmell was designated the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Bulldogs go on the road this weekend to participate in the Pierce College Men’s Basketball Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament, opening against the South Puget Sound Clippers on Friday, November 28th, at 2:00pm.
