The BCC Baseball team played a pair of double headers this past weekend, earning victories in all 4 contests, including an extra-innings thriller, improving their record to 6-2 on the season. The first day of action, Saturday March 8th, the Bulldogs found themselves in Gresham, Oregon taking on Mount Hood CC. Bellevue struck first when sophomore Jeff Hanna, who led off the game with a walk, came around to score on a groundout from sophomore Will Campbell. With the score tied in the top of the 3rd, sophomore Jason Moseby came around to score on a Saints error, giving Bellevue their first lead of the day. The Bulldogs added some insurance in the top of the 8th when sophomore Kyle Decater scored on a Moseby single to cap off the 4-1 victory. Sophomore Brad Reid earned the win for Bellevue going 5 innings giving up only 3 hits and only 1 unearned run. The bullpen for the Bulldogs was stifling giving up only 2 singles in 4 innings of work. Freshman Brent Miller earned the save while sophomore Chad Mautner provided middle relief. The second game saw even more action then the first, with Bellevue holding on for an 8-7 victory to complete the sweep. The Bulldogs again struck first when freshman Keegan Acker scored on a groundout after leading off the game with a double. Trailing 2-1 in the top of the 2nd, BCC batted around in the inning exploding for 5 runs on only 3 hits. Kyle Laukala, Jonathan Leung, Nick Johnson, Marc Schuermeyer, and Riley Tompkins all picked up RBIs in the inning for Bellevue. With the score tied in the top of the 7th, Schuermeyer led off the inning with a single and used heads up base running to find himself at 3rd when a Mount Hood throwing error brought him around to plate. Campbell then scored on a double from freshman Brett Dvorak in what would turn out to be the winning run. Freshman Kaylor Hasbargen pitched 3 innings of relief to earn the victory for the Bulldogs. In the second day of action Bellevue found themselves in an extra-innings thriller holding on to defeat Chemeketa 9-7 in 11 innings. The Bulldogs struck early and often racking up 5 runs in the first 2 innings. Schuermeyer, Campbell, and sophomore Connor Rankin all picked up RBIs in the first inning to take a quick 3-0 lead. Schuermeyer combined with freshman Ryan Shelton to tack on 2 more runs for an early 5-0 lead. After gradually surrendering the lead, BCC took the lead for good in the 11th when a Tompkins single scored Moseby. The Bulldogs tacked on 2 more insurance runs on a Gio Learned sac fly followed by a Laukala double, which plated Tompkins. Sophomore Troy Burki got the start and pitched 3 scoreless innings while Brent Miller earned his second win in as many days pitching the 11th. In the second and final game of the day Bellevue once again found themselves in an extra-innings affair, but pulled off the sweep, downing Chemeketa 6-5 in 10 innings. For the fourth time in as many games the Bulldogs scored in the 1st when Hanna turned a walk and stolen base into a run of a single by freshman Lucas Shaw. Despite a leadoff homerun in the 4th by Laukala, BCC found themselves trailing 5-2 in the top of the 7th. RBI singles from Schuermeyer and Shaw combined with a bases loaded walk drawn by Hanna tied the game at 5. With runners on the corners and 2 outs in the 10th, Learned once again delivered, singling home Decater for the game winning run. Picking up the win in relief was freshman Cody Goodfellow who went 5 strong innings giving up only 2 runs and holding Chemeketa scoreless for the last 4 while striking out 5. Next up for the Bulldogs will be a double header at home on Saturday March 15th against Lower Columba. First pitch is scheduled for noon. |
