Amanda Johnson

Amanda Johnson has been teaching at Bellevue College for more than 10 years. Since 1993, Amanda has been working with ESL students teaching job preparation classes. She loves working with students; helping them to improve their skills and seeing their confidence grow. Students quickly feel comfortable in her classes. Recently, she developed a new class On the Job Communications which is very popular with ESL level-6 students. Before working at BC, Amanda worked in Human Resources and management training. She has worked with businesses to develop training and has taught workplace ESL. She helps job hunters to write resumes: really good ones! This is helpful to students who need clear directions. Students who work hard and have good attendance leave the Preparing for Work program with an outstanding resume.

Amanda is also good at recognizing talent. She recruits volunteers who have the time and skills to help in the program. She always encourages the students to connect with others to build their network. Her classes quickly feel like a community. "I am look forward to helping you develop your skills and confidence" says Amanda.

In class, students have the opportunity to learn about the culture of the American workplace. Students learn specific strategies about how to communicate with their supervisors, co-workers, and customers. In addition, the class provides a lot of practical exercises including calling in late or sick, completing forms, responding to safety warnings, reading job announcements, etc. Heather feels happy knowing that she is helping people learn English to they can succeed in their current jobs and feel confident with their skills so they can find better jobs.
