Syllabus
for Music 140, 143, 240 & 243
Private Instruction at Belllevue
Community College involves the use of numerous affiliate faculty instructors
from off-campus. For Music Majors, the
requirements are six quarters of Private Instruction: three quarters at the 100 level, and three at
the 200 level.
Music 140 and 240 are one-credit courses representing a
half-hour meeting with the instructor per week.
It is assumed the student will spend seven to ten hours per week in
individual practice on the assigned lesson.
Music 143 and
243 are two-credit courses representing a one-hour
meeting with the instructor per week. It
is assumed the student will spend twelve to sixteen hours per week in
individual practice on the assigned lesson.
Enrollment in Private Instruction
requires permission of the supervising BCC instructor listed in the quarterly
schedule before
the course can be scheduled. Entry codes
can be picked up from the Music Program Coordinator in E100B in the absence of the Supervising instructor.
When enrolled, an
instructor must be chosen during discussions with the supervisor. It is then the responsibility of the student
to contact the chosen instructor and arrange for a weekly meeting time. The student then returns to record the
address, phone number, and meeting time of the instructor with the BCC
supervisor.
Following this, the student is then required to:
1.
Pay for each lesson in a manner worked out
with the instructor.
2.
Attend ten (or eight minimum) lessons through
the quarter.
3.
Keep the Supervisor informed of any problems
that occur.
4.
Set aside at least one to two and a
half hours per day for practice.
5.
Play a “Jury” for the Supervisor at quarter’s
end, being prepared to perform a solo, etude, or exercise from the lessons
covered. Students will provide their own
accompanist, if required.
The instructor grades the
student on progress made through the quarter based on the preparation of each
lesson. The jury is
required to receive that grade. Students will be notified of the jury day and
sign up for an hour in E100B. Juries are
typically held during Finals week.
The success or failure of
Private Instruction is directly proportional to the amount of time spend in
relevant practice. This has a direct
bearing on future success as a musician.
