How to approach each lesson

  • Always begin with the assigned sections in the Textbook before coming to class.  Prepare them so you can discuss, ask questions and participate.  Write out vocabulary and take notes on paper or in the margins of your book.
  • Go next to the Workbook.  Complete all the activities in the assigned section for that day after class.  Use your textbook as a reference tool to complete the workbook exercises.
  • Do the Lab Manual assignments.
  • Explore the extra stuff that will make this language fun and interactive – the CD ROM, web sites, music,  movies, newspapers, magazines, radio AM 1360/Radio Sol.
  • Study something related to Spanish every day of the week.  Try to speak, read, write, memorize vocabulary every day.

Participation 15%

·         Attendance and active participation in class are essential to your success.  You will receive points for each day you attend.

·         You will engage in a lot of group and pair work for which you must prepare, and we will all try to speak Spanish as much as possible during class.

·          If you miss 20% or more of the class days (that’s 10 days), you may fail the class.  At the very least, your final grade for the course will be lowered by one letter grade.

·         In case of illness or emergency, please inform me --in advance of the class you will miss-- by email, or through another student.   If you miss class, you are responsible for obtaining any missed information from a classmate.

Classwork  15%

  • Quizzes 10 pts each
  • Role Plays 20 pts each
  • In-class writing

·         This grade is based on completed quizzes, Role Plays, and writing assignments.

·         You must be present to take the quizzes and to do the writing assignments.

·         On occasion, and at my discretion, the Role Play assignments may be made up if you must be absent on a Role Play day, and you have informed me of your absence in advance.

Homework 15%

  • Workbook 50 pts per Cap
  • Lab Manual 25 pts per Cap

·         This grade is based on completed Workbook and Lab Manual assignments.

·         I will accept homework until 5 pm on the day it is due in case you miss class.   You may email homework to me, leave it for me in R 230, or send it with a classmate.

·         If you turn in homework the day after it is due, you will receive half credit for the assignment.  I will not accept homework more than one day late.

Exams  Preliminary – 4   40%

Final Exam and Orals    15%

·         There is an exam at the end of each chapter and one comprehensive final exam for a total of six.

·         Exams can, on occasion, be taken in advance, but they cannot be made up after an absence.

·         You may drop your lowest exam score not including the final exam.

Classroom Standards:

  • Please turn off pagers and cell phones during class.
  • You may bring drinks into class but you must dispose properly of the containers.
  • If you are habitually disruptive – arriving late, talking out of turn, studying for another class, sleeping – I will ask you to leave.

Syllabus and Calendar Modification:

Occasionally, I may need to change the syllabus or calendar.  Such changes could include, but are not limited to, the number and dates of exams and quizzes, homework assignments, etc.  I will announce changes in class.  Students who are absent when changes are announced are responsible for obtaining this information.

Extra Credit:

Worth up to 20 points total and applied to your homework grade, it involves watching a movie in Spanish or listening to a radio program and answering some questions in writing.  All extra credit assignments are due on the last day of classes BEFORE the start of final exams – NOT on the day of the final exam.

Tutoring:

Visit www.bcc.ctc.edu/tutoring or see the tutor coordinator in C 162 to sign up for individual tutoring or show up at group tutoring sessions that begin usually during the second week of classes.  Both tutoring options are free.

Academic Dishonesty:  Stealing, cheating and plagiarizing will not be tolerated.  A student caught engaging in such activity will receive 0 points for the assignment in question and will be reported, without exception, to the Dean of Student Services.

BCC Disability Statement:

Students with disabilities who have accommodation needs are required to meet with the Director of Disability Support Services, B 132 (phone 425-564-2498), to establish their eligibility for accommodation.  In addition, students who require accommodation in classes must review those requirements with each instructor during the first week of the quarter.

Drop Procedure:

Don’t give up too soon, but if you decide to get out, you must withdraw officially with the Registration Office by the date set by the college.  If you simply stop coming, you will receive an F for the class which will really mess up your GPA.

Tips:

1.      Make friends and study partners with your classmates and exchange phone numbers and email addresses.

2.      Come see me!!  I instruct, tutor, and answer all questions.  Don’t hesitate to visit me.

3.      Never underestimate the power of good Mexican food.

On-Campus Sites to use the technology

You have free access to computer resources on campus in two places.  The CD programs are already installed on designated computers in these two places, but you must bring your CD’s with you to run the programs.
