COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-2:40 p.m.  It will include lecture, discussion, slide presentations, the development of a resource notebook, review charts and completion of weekly worksheets.

B.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. You should be able to identify different styles and periods of furniture from the antiquity through the mid-nineteenth century.

  1. You will gain an understanding of why furniture took the forms that it did in different historic periods.

  1. You should be able to analyze furniture from four different points of view:
    1. Function
    2. Technology
    3. Aesthetics
    4. Social Status

  1. You should know the relationship of concurrent periods to each other.  (A Time Line has been supplied in your module.  Refer to it frequently!)

C.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. 100% ATTENDANCE:  We will move quickly through a great deal of information and if you miss class you will miss valuable details.  A complete tentative schedule of lecture topics, worksheet assignments and exams is attached. Put this in your notebook and refer to it constantly.

  1. The worksheet assignments are to be completed and handed in on the dates indicated after discussing them in class.  They will be graded on a credit/no credit basis – if you don’t hand in a worksheet or if it is not completed, no credit will be given.  These worksheets cover the important information to be learned.  They are your responsibility and for your benefit.  If you don’t do them you will not learn anything and risk failing the course.  It’s a cliché, but it’s true:  Learning is not a spectator sport.  Please take careful note of the due dates for the worksheets. No late worksheets will be accepted.

  1. NEATNESS AND ACCURATE PRESENTATION IS VERY IMPORTANT in everything that you do within the field of Interior Design.  Work had and set high standards for yourself.  It will pay off in this class and in your future.

  1. The student is expected to augment the text and class module with his/her own lecture notes.  It is expected that the student will use research materials to further clarify lecture topics.

D.

RESOURCE BOOK AND REVIEW CHARTS:

You will be required to create a Resource Book and Review Charts to be handed in at the end of the quarter.  This will be your Resource Notebook.  Included in this notebook should be examples or pictures relating to each period that we study in addition to your worksheets, notes and articles to enhance the content of your book.  Many modern furnishings borrow heavily from the past, so look for these examples and add them to your notebook along with good examples of furnishings of the periods we are covering.  This is a time consuming project, so keep up with it as we study each period throughout the quarter!

E.

SUPPLIES

  1. Folder with interior pockets for turning in weekly assignments.  (Place your name clearly in the upper right-hand corner.)
  2. Three-ring, loose-leaf binder and index dividers (for dividing the periods, etc.)
  3. Scissors or exacto knife.
  4. Rubber cement or glue stick
  5. Unlined notebook paper or other unlined paper for drawing different period designs.
  6. Tracing paper
  7. Black marking pen (i.e. not ballpoint)
  8. Magazines with pictures of room interiors and furnishings.

Please keep your notebook well organized and crisply neat!  Your drawings should be clear and unmarked.
