Introduction to Interior Design

DESCRIPTION:           This course meets Mondays and Wednesdays 5:30-7:40 pm.  Class sessions will include lectures, discussions, slide presentations and lab time.

MODULE:                   Introduction to Interior Design

 

PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE:

1.       To acquaint you with the Interior Design profession and to provide some of the information necessary for becoming an Interior Designer.

2.       To help you decide if you want to become an Interior Designer.

3.       To help you understand the relationship of the design fundamentals to the study and the practice of Interior Design.

4.       To help you analyze your own design problems.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this basic course in students will be able to:

1.       list and explain the goals of an interior designer, for example, by analyzing situations in terms of meeting the goals of Interior Design.

2.       identify and demonstrate the steps in the design process, for example, the student may demonstrate application of the process in a project.

3.       demonstrate a working knowledge of the vocabulary of interior design and utilize in student work.

4.       explain and apply the elements and principles of design to analyze and solve interior design problems.

5.       demonstrate the ability to communicate a concept, for example, in preparation of a concept board.

6.       state and apply fundamental concepts for space planning and furniture arrangement.

7.       utilizing the goals of interior design, select and analyze for appropriateness materials for backgrounds, furnishings and lighting.

8.       define and demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of human needs when considering universal, accessible, and environmental design in today’s space planning.

 

The student will demonstrate the meeting of these objectives by successful completion of quizzes, exercises (projects) and exams throughout the quarter.

 

INSTRUCTOR’S EXPECTATIONS:

1.       Conscientious attendance (daily sign-in) and on-time arrival.  If you are unable to be in class or have to miss part of class, speak to fellow students and/or borrow notes to learn what you missed.  Also, try to let me know if you will be absent.  Take the initiative and be resourceful!

2.       Assignments completed and turned in on time.  No late assignments will be accepted for grading.

3.       Your best work—as accurate as possible, and neat (strive for perfection).

4.       Participation in class discussion and class attendance.

5.       Responsiveness.  Please let me know, for instance, if you have difficulty in understanding the assignment.  It’s important to me that assignments be clear.

6.       All students are asked to volunteer for 2 hours of clean-up/organization time in our fabrics/samples lab.

7.       Please turn off cellular phones and pagers.  If they go off, you will be asked to leave class.

 

CLASSROOM DECORUM

While I encourage study groups outside of class, please no chatting with one another, regardless of the topic, during class.  It is a great temptation to talk during the slide presentations, but it is very distractive for me and the other students in the class, so please be considerate.

GRADES WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:

 

1.         Quizzes                        15%

2.         Exercises                      40%

3.         Midterm Exam               15%

4.         Final Exam                    20%

5.         Attendance                    10%

 

            90 – 100% = A-, A

            80 – 89% = B-, B, B+

            70 – 79% = C-, C, C+

            60 – 69% = D

 

Three quizzes will be given throughout the quarter.  There will be no make-up quizzes.  Please bring scantrons and #2 pencils to the Midterm and Final Exams.

 

SUPPLIES LIST:

1.       Folder with interior pockets for turning in assignments.  Place your name clearly in the upper right-hand corner.

2.       Scissors and x-acto knife with extra blades

3.       Metal straight edge (ruler with cork backing is the best for these exercises)

4.       Variety of strong adhesives (Liquid Nails, Gorilla Glue, spray mount, glue stick)

5.       Unlined notebook paper or other unlined paper

6.       Tracing paper

7.       Ruler

8.       Black marking pen (not ball point) – fine tip

9.       Magazines with pictures of room interiors (some available in Sample Room)

10.   Miscellaneous materials for exercises (available in Sample Room)

11.   Color wheel (BCC Bookstore)

12.   Furniture template (BCC Bookstore)

13.   Page protectors (approx. 50)

14.   1 ½” 3-ring binder to compile all your exercises
