Catalog Description:  Course consists of movement studies designed for students interested in developing technique in a highly energized style of jazz dance.

Dance clothing:  Jazz pants and shirts of conformable clothing.  Sweats are acceptable.  Clothing must allow stretching and movement.  Jazz shoes preferred.  All shoes not to be worn outside before entering the dance studio.

Class:  Consists of a warm-up with emphasis on technique.  This is an important part of the class in that not only does it prevent injury, but movements later used in dance combinations are presented.

Class includes short and long movement sequences using technique practiced in the warm-up.  Throughout the quarter dances are presented, practiced and reviewed.  Performance is expected to gradually improve.

Grading:  Based on the following:

                        1.  Knowing the material presented

                                                a. the sequence

                                                 b. the timing

                        2.  Performing at regular tempo

                        3.  Performing with style (when sequence and timing are mastered and one can project the style intended).

Also based on the individual student and whether or not he/she has had previous dance training.

Effort is rewarded through attendance, attention and effort.

Office hours/conference:  Immediately after class in the dance studio, or by appointment in R016.  Please discuss any problems with the class.
