Course Description:
During the term we will be exploring why we take pictures? Do we do it to remember, to immortalize a
moment or to portray a story or idea?
There will be eight assignments during this term and a portfolio will be
due as your final at the end of the quarter.
I would like for your work to begin to have more meaning for you and for
the viewer. By the end of the quarter,
you will have a better understanding of why you take pictures and you will be
able to make your work more polished in camera and in the darkroom.
Required immediately will be a 35mm camera with built-in light meter,
adjustable shutter speed, aperture adjustment and manual focus
capabilities. For economy and durability
the Pentax or Nikon starter cameras are recommended
(Nikon FM10).
-10 rolls
of B&W film
-Negative
sleeves, enclosed 3-ring binder
-Canned air, anti-static cloth, sharpie-pen
-B&W
paper, RC 8x10 (by the end of the quarter,
Fiber
paper will be required for all assignments given).
Required Texts:
Photography,
London/Upton/Kobre/Brill, (6th, 7th,
8th edition will be fine)
Criticizing
Photographs, Terry Barrett
Attendance is mandatory. Three
consecutive absences will result in dismissal.
Any four absences is cause for failure.
A significant late arrival or leaving early will be counted as half absence. Attendance at critiques is expected even if
assignments are not completed. Missing a mandatory class, such as a critique, will cause for one
full letter grade dropped in student’s grade of a particular assignment.
Participation is
mandatory and open and courteous discussion is expected. Learning to communicate about photography is
essential to developing photographic vision and creative expression.
You must come
prepared to work every class. Plan to
bring/purchase the supplies you need prior to every meeting. Being broke will not be an excuse for
incomplete assignments.
