Course Overview:
This class will enable students to increase their reading skills for future academic college class work by learning and applying discrete reading components to longer readings. Therefore, a high level of preparedness and participation is expected in this class.

· Respond appropriately to questions about readings
· Clearly express an opinion relevant to the content of a passage
· Support views with reasons and evidence
· Extend and/or apply the ideas expressed in a reading
· Summarize passages
· Identify significant similarities and differences between readings

Late Work Policy
Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the due date. Late assignments will lose ten points for each day they are late and will not be accepted more than two days after the due date.
If you are absent, you are still responsible for the work.
You should exchange information with your classmates in order to contact them for class information when you are absent. It is a good idea to let your instructor know when you will be absent from class.
One make-up test will be allowed per person per quarter. Please discuss your situation with me (your instructor) when you must miss class.
Letters of Recommendation:
I will provide recommendations to students with an A or B class average, consistent attendance, and for those who participate actively in class. Please allow three days for the recommendation.
Classroom Behavior and Expectations:
English Language Institute Department Policies:
Student Absence
Students who miss class 10 times will receive a grade of “F.” Students who miss class 8 or 9 times will receive a grade of “D.” Students who reach a total of 15 absences will be dismissed from the program at the end of the quarter. Being late three times 5 -9 minutes will equal a one-hour absence. Being late 10 or more minutes will equal a one-hour absence.
If you are repeating this class, you must:
a. not miss any more than 5 classes in all of your classes
b. turn in ALL your homework on time
c. get recommendations from ALL your instructors in
order to get a 3rd chance if you fail another time. Otherwise, you may be asked to leave the program.
Plagiarism and cheating
Students are in ELI classes to learn English and ELI teachers are here to help them. Cheating makes that harder for both the students and the teachers. There are different kinds of cheating: plagiarism, “borrowing” a classmate’s homework (partially or wholly), using an essay or a presentation from a previous quarter, using “cheat notes”, and copying answers from classmates’ papers during tests.
Plagiarism is using someone else’s words or ideas as your own in both writing and oral presentations. It is cheating and is not acceptable in American classes.
Examples of plagiarism are:
·Copying from a Web page, book or article
·Buying papers
·Copying from another student
·Using a friend’s paper from a previous quarter
If you plagiarize:
·First time: your teacher will work with you so that you understand what not to
do.
·Second time: Fail the assignment
·Third time: Fail the class and be reported to the
Dean of Student Services. You will possibly be asked to leave the school.
Important Dates:
No Class: Wednesday, July 4th
Midterm: during week 4 of the quarter
BC TOEFL Friday, July 20
End of quarter party Thursday, August 9
Special Needs:
If you require accommodation based on a documented disability, have emergency medical information to share, or need special arrangements in case of emergency evacuation; please make an appointment with DRC (Disability Resource Center.) If you would like to inquire about becoming a DRC student, you may call 564-2498 or go in person to the DRC program office in B132.
