                                November 24, 25 (Thursday, Friday) Thanksgiving Holiday

Course Objectives

  1. To improve your speaking and listening comprehension ability in both casual and academic situations.
  2. To help you to become aware of the non-verbal signals that native speakers use in conversation.
  3. To teach you some basic note taking skills.
  4. To help you become better at expressing opinions in small and large groups
  5. To give you practice in agreeing and disagreeing with conversation partners.
  6. To help you learn to use TV as a tool for improving English.

Course Methods

  1. Large and small group discussions.
  2. Paired conversation practice.
  3. Short academic lectures or recent news reports during which you will take notes and take short quizzes.
  4. Watching selected TV program episodes to learn vocabulary and American culture.
  5. Reenacting favorite scenes from programs to practice pronunciation, intonation, and non-verbal signals.
  6. Tests on the contents of lectures or programs viewed in class.

Things to keep in mind

  1. Practice makes perfect. American teachers like attentive students who actively participate in classes. If you are always quiet in class, you can’t actively participate.
  2. You can learn lots from your classmates as well as from your teacher. Respect classmates even if their accents are not American.  Yours isn’t either.
  3. You will be in this class just 50 minutes a day. During the rest of your day, you need to practice your English. If you get tired, take a break. Enjoy talks with your countrymen. However, don’t speak just your language outside the classroom. If you do, your English will improve rather slowly.
  4. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The fastest learners usually make the most mistakes, but they constantly learn from them.
  5. If you don’t understand something that I have said in class, tell me. If you don’t know what exactly your homework is, ask. Your classmates probably don’t understand, either.

Grading Scale

A = 93 -100

B = 84 – 92

C = 75 – 83

D = under 75, even though you came to class regularly and made a good effort throughout the quarter

F = under 75 because you didn’t try, didn’t do your homework, didn’t pay attention, and/or came to class late or skipped class.
