COURSE DESCRIPTION:
English Through Current Events allows students to express themselves in a relaxed and casual atmosphere in order to gain confidence in all four skill areas – speaking, listening, reading and writing. It is an upper-intermediate to advanced level class where students will discuss topics from articles from current newspapers and magazines, or questions generated by students. There is no text required for the course. The instructor will provide photocopies at the end of each lesson from which the students can prepare for the following week. Although each student will read all the articles for the next lesson, students will rotate being responsible for the discussion questions for a particular article. Students may also turn in written summaries and/or opinion papers at any time. We will talk about what this involves at the first lesson.
ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION:
Students who attend 75% of class time will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the quarter. Although here is no grade for this class, students are encouraged to come to class regularly, to be prepared for each lesson, and to participate as fully as possible in order to get the maximum benefit.
As a courtesy to others, please remember
to turn off your cell phone during class.
I hope you enjoy this class and improve your English skills!
