What We're All About

The Volunteer Literacy Program is an integral part of the Developmental Education Program at Bellevue College. Volunteers of all ages, educational and cultural backgrounds donate their time and talents helping our adult learners achieve their personal and professional goals.

The Developmental Education Program offers classes for adults who wish to:

The mission of the Volunteer Literacy Program is to establish and support an environment for tutorial partnerships in which students from ABE classes can acquire ability and confidence in their educational, vocational and life goals. Tutor sessions and Talk Time themes are focused on student needs and interests. Instructors and volunteers follow the Washington State Core Competencies which are life skills based.

After training, tutors are able to:

  • Assist teachers in ESL, ABE, and GED classrooms,
  • Tutor small groups or one-on-one,
  • Assist students in the Basic Skills Lab,
  • Facilitate English conversation groups in Talk Time.
