Surveys theatre history starting with ancient Greece. Class
format includes lecture, discussions, guest speakers, and
in-class scene study. Learn to analyze structure and balance
of elements of a script; major historical styles and the 4
theater spaces; playwright's point of view and director's
"concept"; a character by identifying his/her beats and objectives
and by creating a written autobiography based on circumstances
and imagination; evaluation of a performance using criteria
of believability, concentration, moment to moment, and concept;
how a typical theatre operates.

and painting. Intensive lecture/lab format.

drawings and build them; basic special effects; a production
schedule from concept to opening night.

common electrical services used in lighting; safe wiring;

artificial light and how to theatricalize it; use of color;
basic lighting design for a play.

Drama 152 * Acting: Movement *5 CR.
Concentrates on tuning the actor's body. Students gain fluidity,
flexibility and agility and develop specific skills such as
stage fights and mime. Students practice dramatic situations
incorporating both character work and strenuous physical activity.
Learn to move on impulse; physically create a character; use
a physical warm-up; learn to trust other actors physically;
choreograph/ present an unarmed combat; avoid cliché movement;
create a movement piece.

Emphasizes interpretation of the text through work on scenes
and monologues. Topics include character and text analysis;
rehearsal tools; playing character age; underplaying, overplaying;
rhythm, timing, pacing; and achieving an objective.
Learn to create a believable character
using: beats and objectives, autobiography, pursuing intentions
and technical and emotional skills. Perform a 5-minute scene
based on the analysis of character and text.

Offers in-depth analysis of and performance opportunities
in a play with limited production values. All students in
the class are cast in the play. Lecture/lab format. May be
repeated for a maximum of 15 credits. *Prerequisite: Permission
of instructor. Learn to perform a character
in a studio play, to hang and focus lights, create sound cues,
locate props and costumes required by script, run a stage
crew for the performance or run the show as stage manager;
to publicize the play.

Requires a minimum of 33 hours of backstage work on the studio

presenting studio theatre play. Includes scenery/costume construction;
properties procurement; lighting design/execution and sound
