The 2008 American Indian Film Festival edition will be honored by the presence of Seattle filmmaker Sandra Sunrising Osawa (Makah) as our keynote speaker. Ms. Osawa has led the movement of American Indians into obtaining key roles in the telling of their own stories. She has been an independent producer longer than any other Indian person in America. She started as a producer and independent filmmaker in the 1970’s with a 10-part series TV titled The Native American Series (KNBC-TV) and becoming the first Native American woman to produce for commercial television

Her films feature Indian people in non-traditional, non-stereotypical roles that expand the definition of what being and Indian is all about. Osawa's films are layered with mutli issues and six of her documentaties have been broadcasted onPBS and are studied at college levels due to the strong academic issues that they raised.

Ms. Osawa has received numerous awards and has taught scriptwriting at Evergreen State College and video production at Seattle Central Community College. Her latest film, Maria Tallchief (2007), won Best Documentary Feature at the 2008 Fargo Film Festival.  This film brings to the small screen the untold story on the life and artistry of Maria Tallchief, who rose from an Indian community in Oklahoma to become America’s first prima ballerina and in the process changed the course of ballet in America.
