The
mission of Longhouse Media is to catalyze Indigenous people and
communities to use media as a tool for self-expression, cultural
preservation, and social change. Longhouse Media draws from traditional
and modern forms of artistic expression, storytelling, teaching and
inquiry, based in the technologies of today. Native Lens is a program
of Longhouse Media, which supports the growth and expression of
Indigenous youth through digital media making.
In 2004 the Native Lens program was launched in
partnership with the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. Since the program began
there was incredible interest and an outpouring of support. Asked by tribal leadership to continue and
expand Native Lens, Longhouse Media was launched in September 2005 by Executive
Director Tracy Rector and Artistic Director Annie Silverstein with the support
of the Swinomish Indian Tribe to carry forward the work of Native Lens to other
Native communities. In only three
dynamic years Longhouse Media has worked with more than 900 Native youth in the
Pacific Northwest and across the Nation through partnerships with regional
tribes, media organizations, funding agencies and established non-profits.
In 2008, Native Lens youth media makers, Nick Clark, Cody
Cayou and Travis Tom, helped to complete March Point, an environmental
documentary which received a National Geographic All Roads Seed Grant. As they
take on the responsibility of making a documentary film about an issue that
affects their community, Nick, Cody and Travis gain a new sense of themselves.
March Point received the Earth Award at the 2008 National Film Festival for
Talented Youth, the Audience Choice Award at the 2008 Indigenous Global Green
Festival, screened at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York
and in D.C. and will have its first National Television Broadcast in November
as part of PBS' Independent Lens 2008/2009 series.
