Information for Pre-BSN Nursing Students

 

There are several schools in the Puget Sound area that offer the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  Admission to nursing programs is very competitive, students should prepare for application to more than one nursing school.  Work or volunteer experience is necessary.

 

College coursework required by most BSN nursing programs

Two quarters of chemistry with labs:  BCC Chem 101 & 102 (prerequisite:  Math 097)

One quarter of nutrition:  BCC Biol 130 or Home Ec 130

Two quarters of anatomy and physiology:  BCC Biol 260 & 261 (prerequisite:  Biol 101)

One quarter of microbiology:  BCC Biol 250 (prerequisite:  Biol 101)

One quarter of developmental psychology:  BCC Psych 204 (prerequisite:  Psych 100)

                       

English/Humanities:  Beyond the required science courses, a broad liberal arts background is encouraged.  Ten quarter credits of English composition are required.

 

Math:  Most BSN programs require one college level math course plus a statistics course.  Students should be aware of prerequisite courses for the math and sciences.

The above sample schedule provides 96 credits and does not include any prerequisite math or English classes which may needed to bring your skills to college level.  Your schedule may vary significantly from this depending upon your previous coursework.  Math and English assessments are required prior to enrolling in math or English courses.  Math 156 is a prerequisite for the statistics course, BA 240.   Classes may need to be taken during summer quarters in order to complete the prerequisites for nursing school. 

 

GPA

The average GPA for entering nursing school students at the University of Washington is approximately 3.5.  Students should strive to maintain a strong GPA with limited withdrawals, incompletes, repeated courses and non-graded options.
