Course Objectives:  This course covers chapters 6-10 in the textbook.  This course provides intermediate level instruction in the basic structures and vocabulary of Spanish to develop your functional proficiency in understanding, reading, speaking, and writing Spanish.  Your knowledge of the geography and cultures of the Hispanic world is enhanced, including familiarity with related art, music, literature, traditions, and customs.  You should be prepared to speak in SPANISH during the course.  This course requires you to use the Textbook website, the “Aventuras Supersite” from home.  If you do not have access to the Internet at home, the Language Learning Lab in A244 is available for your use.  This is a beginning level course and teaches the very basics, if you have had Spanish in high school, come see me and we’ll make sure this is a good fit for you.

Exams must be taken on the scheduled date.  No make-ups are allowed, except for emergencies (i.e. death in the family, serious illness).  If you are unable to make it to a scheduled exam due to an emergency, you must contact me before class begins (an email or phone message is all it takes).

No late homework will be accepted.  You must be prepared with completed assignments at the beginning of class.  I check homework daily!  This course moves quickly and homework must be completed to be successful in the course.

The Final Exam is in the form of a 1 pg. composition, which will be written in class.  The final will take place on Thursday June 15th, during regularly scheduled class time. The Final will be comprehensive and will cover chapters 6-10 in the text.  Prompts for the final will be given in advance, so that you are able to prepare for the writing.

BCC Disability Statement:  Students with disabilities who have accommodation needs are required to meet with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) office, Room B132 (telephone 425-564-2498 or TTY 425-564-4110), to establish their eligibility for accommodation.  The DRC office will provide each eligible student with an accommodation letter.  Students who require accommodation in class must review the DRC Students with Mobility Challenges who may need assistance in case of an emergency situation or evacuation would register with DRC, or review those needs with the Instructor as well.

How do I get my grades:

Daily Homework:  At the beginning of each class session (first 5-10 minutes), I will check the previous night’s assigned homework for completion.  If it is finished, you will get full points.  We then correct the homework together as a class, where you will have the opportunity to correct your mistakes and ask questions.  I believe this is one of the most valuable aspects of the class—you receive immediate feedback on your errors, and can get questions answered immediately.  On the day of the chapter test, you will then turn in your workbook for me to check during the exam.  Your workbook should be perfect at that point, with all of your mistakes corrected.  You will receive daily homework points (5 pts per day), each day I check, and then will receive your chapter homework points (40-50 pts), as well.  If you follow the process, you should be able to receive 100% on homework points.

Tests:  Each chapter test will include a listening activity, and then multiple writing activities.  Study guides will be available on the MyBcc Class site to help you study before the tests.  Your lowest test score will be dropped to accommodate any missed tests.  No test make-ups will be allowed.  All tests must be taken on their scheduled dates.

Participation:  Come to class on time, ready to work and anxious to learn.  Participate actively in all class discussions, ask questions, and work productively in groups.  Spanish should be spoken at all times once you enter the classroom.  If you finish a group activity early, chat in Spanish.  If you come early to class, chat in Spanish.  You will receive up to 5 participation points for each chapter—I will be watching, listening and chatting, too!  Come prepared with all materials!  Be sure to bring your Lab Manual to class, we will be using it during class time.

Aventuras Supersite Activities:  For each chapter you will be required to complete activities on the Aventuras supersite, generally between 10-15 activities practicing vocabulary and grammar.  Assignments will be graded with credit/no-credit only.  Please use the activities to PRACTICE!  There is one quiz at the end of each section, which will help you prepare for the exam.  You will have only one attempt, and you may use your book.  Think of it as a study guide.

How do I know my grade?  I will use an online grading system at www.engrade.com.  I will update grades at the end of each chapter test.  You will be able to access your current grade at any time from home.  Instructions to access grades will be posted on the MyBcc site, after the chapter 6 test.  It is your responsibility to access grades and come to me with any questions or concerns.

Language Learning Lab:  The Language Learning Lab (LLL) is located in A244.  We will be visiting the LLL occasionally as a class to work on online activities.  It is a great resource.
