COURSE
OBJECTIVE: By the
end of this course you should have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of
interior design. This will include: principles and elements of design, basic
color concepts, floor plans, board presentation, fabric selection, space
planning, basic lighting types, window treatment categories and client
relations.
COURSE
MATERIAL: This
class will primarily be taught from your textbook, with supplemental material
added from alternate sources as needed.
Quizzes will be based on material discussed in class, including: assigned reading, lectures and handouts. A review sheet will be posted to myBCC.net
one week prior to each quiz. Class
projects are designed to help you grasp and apply basic interior design
principles.

CLASS DESCRIPTION: This class meets every Monday and Wednesday
from 12:30 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. for the afternoon section. Class sessions will include lectures, slide
presentations, videos and in-class exercises.
The course work combines projects and exams.
REQUIRED TEXT & SUPPLIES:
Interiors: An Introduction
by Nielson and Taylor. The textbook is
also on reserve in the Interior Design Library in L-114.
Green plastic furniture template
available in the BCC Student Art Store located in the C building.
Various papers, 8”x10”
Artfolios or spiral binding, interior design magazines & finish materials
(fabric, tile, carpet, paint samples etc.), 15”x20” foam-core boards, misc.
cutting tools and adhesives. Most finish
materials are available for free in the Student Design Lab in L-115.
Color Wheel available in
the BCC Student Art Store located in the C building is optional.
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
1.
To acquaint you with the interior design
profession and to provide some of the information necessary for becoming an
Interior Designer.
2.
To help you decide if you want to become
an Interior Designer.
3.
To help you understand the relationship
of design fundamentals to the study and practice of Interior Design.
4.
To help you analyze your own design
problems.
CLASS REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Daily attendance and on-time arrival. We will cover a vast amount of material and
it is essential that you be on time and present for each class. If you miss more than four class sessions,
you will be asked to withdraw from the course in accordance with the Arts &
Humanities Division attendance policies.
2.
Responsive and pro-active participation
in class discussions & in-class exercises. You will be graded on your participation in
class discussion and in-class group activities.
In addition, each student must work for a cumulative of two hours in the
sample room during the quarter to help Cheryl maintain an organized space. Your attendance will count toward
participation points as well.
3.
Late assignments will not be accepted
and zero points will be given for the assignment/s not
turned in on time. If you are
experiencing an emergency situation that prevents you from turning in your
work, it is your responsibility to notify me ASAP to make an alternate
arrangement.
4.
PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION & NEATNESS
COUNT! All
work must be neat
and
organized with great attention paid to workmanship and details. Points will be
deducted
for messiness.
5. It is your responsibility to let me
know if you are having trouble understanding a
concept or assignment. Any students struggling with this course
should see me as soon as possible for a little extra help. This includes anyone having difficulty
reading, writing or understanding English and anyone who has additional
questions not answered in class. I am
happy to help you as much as possible, so please feel free to ask me for help
if you need it.
6. Please turn off all cell phones
and pagers during class.
7.
Talking amongst students during lecture
is not acceptable.
If you have something
pertinent to share
with the class, please raise your hand and do so. Otherwise, I expect your complete and full
attention during class time.
