Course Description:

This class will help you to refine your reading skills for your academic college classes. The content of the course will focus on our textbook and the readings included there as well as the novel Where the Heart Is, which we will be reading throughout the quarter. You will be expected not only to discuss the readings but also to summarize various sections of them. We will engage in group work frequently, and a high level of participation is expected in this class.

 

Learning Outcomes:

When the course is finished, students will be able to:

·        Confirm or revise predictions made before reading a passage

·        Draw conclusions and make inferences from a reading

·        Identify author’s point of view in a reading

·        Analyze fiction through identification of plot, character, setting, theme, and figurative language

·        Analyze non-fiction by recognizing rhetorical organization and types of support used in development

·        Respond appropriately to questions about readings

·        Clearly express an opinion relevant to the content of a passage

·        Support views with reasons and evidence

·        Extend and /or apply ideas expressed in a reading

·        Summarize passages

·        Use inductive and deductive reasoning to come to logical conclusions about a reading

·        Synthesize information to create new ideas and opinions

·        Recognize one’s own biases and values and acknowledge the perspectives of others

 

 

Grading:

Textbook Reading/Vocabulary quizzes         30%      Grading Scale:

Midterm and Final on the novel                  30%      A = 93 – 100       D= 0-74(repeat level; good effort)

Summaries                                              20%      B = 84 – 92        F= 0-74(repeat level; unsatisfactory effort)

Discussion work                                      20%      C = 75 -83         

 

You must achieve a grade of at least 75% or higher to pass this class

 

 

Attendance:

·          Attendance and participation are critical for success in this class. Any hour that a student is not in class will be counted as an absence.  Students who miss class 12 times will receive a grade of “F.” Students who miss class 10 or 11 times will receive a grade of “D.” Three (3) tardies of 5 minutes or more will equal 1 absence.

·          Assignments are considered late if they are not turned in at the beginning of class on the due date. Late assignments lose 10% of their value for each day they are late. No assignments will be accepted two days after the due date.

·          If you are absent from class, please ask someone to find out what you missed. You are still responsible for missed material in the event of an absence.

Come to class prepared with all of your supplies and with your homework finished.

Be a student who is willing to talk and ask questions.

Respect the classroom as an English only environment.

Be respectful of your fellow classmates and your instructor at all times.
