Reading Lab: D204

The purpose of the Reading Lab is to give students at Bellevue College the opportunity to become better readers by improving vocabulary skills, reading rate (speed), and comprehension skills. The drill and practice work in the lab is designed to sharpen and enhance reading skills which are necessary for students to successfully handle college-level, content courses in all academic disciplines.

Lab Hours

Please check the Reading Lab Web Page for current hours.

Lab Staff

Lab staff can diagnose strengths and weaknesses and suggest remedies. Lab teaching assistants are in charge of the lab on an hour-by-hour, day-by-day basis. Reading tutors are available to answer questions and provide guidance as students work through their individual reading programs.

Time Required

Students who wish to improve their reading skills need to plan to devote at least two hours per week to doing so. Improving reading speed is a physical skill which can only be acquired through consistent practice at regular intervals. Improving vocabulary skill requires memorizing and understanding word meanings, as well as developing the ability to use words in context. Improved comprehension skills follow improved vocabulary skills and increased reading rate, as students learn to grasp meaning in larger and larger thought clusters and to work with ideas at increasingly higher cognitive levels.
