COURSE OBJECTIVE

 

The purpose of this course is to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary for quality communication with other people.  This objective will be accomplished through the study and application of interpersonal communication theory and concepts as they relate to your personal mission and goals.

 

FORMAT

You will be engaged in activities, classroom discussions, and small group work designed to aid your understanding of the concepts discussed in class and your text.  Although your instructor will lecture for small periods of time, this is not a lecture course.  It is therefore essential that you commit to being an active participant in this class.  Regular class attendance is required and essential for success in this course.  The reading materials in this class contain complex theory and terminology.  It is highly recommended that you have a college reading level.  Please consult your English placement test scores.

EXAMS

Exams will cover lecture material, class discussions, handouts and readings from the text.  Exam format consists of a combination of true/false and multiple-choice questions.  A review sheet will be out two days before each exam.  A class review session will be conducted one day before each exam.

 

JOURNAL

Writing assignments consist of a consists of application exercises designed to have you apply the concepts and theories discussed in class, reading questions on the 7 Habits books, and a personal mission statement assignment.  Journals are turned in for grading in the 5th and 10th week of the quarter.

 

 

 

 

 

PARTICIPATION

Participation will be evaluated on the basis of your application of interpersonal communication theory and concepts in classroom discussion and activities.  Regular class attendance is essential for classroom participation.  Students missing 6 or more classes will not be eligible for an “A” grade in participation. 

 

FINAL PAPER

The final paper is a comprehensive evaluation of your ability to apply interpersonal communication concepts and theories to your communication with other people.  This assignment is given in place of a final exam.  Papers should be 8 pages (typed, double-spaced) with extensive application of information explored during the course.  A paper guide will be given several weeks before the end of the quarter. 

 

POLICIES

 

1.      Late work or exams will not be accepted unless arrangements are made with me before the due date.  Make up exams are comprised of essay questions.

 

2.      Given the emphasis on participation, attendance is required in this class.  Students with 10 or more absences will not receive credit for the course.

 

3.      My goal is to create an environment where students feel they have an opportunity to learn.

4.      Students caught cheating on an exam or assignment will not receive any credit for that  

portion of the class and will be reported to the Dean of Student Programs.

 

5.      Class attendance will be checked at the beginning of each class.  If you come in late, it is

your responsibility to make sure that you’re counted as present.  Students more than 10 minutes late will receive an absence for the class.

 

6.      I am always available during office hours.  However, if you cannot meet during this time,   

      feel free to schedule an appointment.  I do request that you schedule appointments at least  

      24 hours in advance.

 

7.      Extra credit is given for outlines of the Adler text and the Covey book.  Outlines are due the

      first day the reading is assigned and must contain a summary of all bold-typed concepts or      

      terms in each text.  Outlines should be hand written and a minimum of two pages.

 

8.      If you have a documented disability and need to have some type of accommodation, please  

      meet with me as soon as possible.
