A survey of music history explores the development of the art-form of music from its beginnings to the diversity of styles
we recognize in today's music. It is taught in two separate
parts covering two different historical periods, but designed to
be distinct, non-sequential courses. Both courses cover the
basics of musical expression, including definitions, origins of
harmony and instruments. Each course will explore the differing
forms, styles and prominent composers of each period of history:
113 - Antiquity to 1800; 114 - 1750 to present.
TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS:
The required text is The Enjoyment of Music - Shorter version
ninth edition with 4 CD's. It is available in the BCC Bookstore
(D103). CD’s are not required but might be quite helpful during the course as well as for your listening in the future.
COURSE ORGANIZATION:
The class will involve reading both the text and assigned reference materials, listening both to lectures and musical examples, writing class notes, homework assignments, and a term paper. Each student will prepare a research paper on a prominent composer being studied, and present their findings to the class as part of the course content (l0-15min.) Each student will write a mid-term and a final examination to reflect assimilation of the coursework covered, as well as individual chapter tests. 3 days notice for all tests. Office hour 9:30AM.
GRADING PROCEDURES:
l. Daily work - participation in class discussions demonstrating knowledge of materials covered. Also includes listening exercises. Chapter tests every 2 weeks with 3 days notice.
2. Mid-term examination-ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY!
3. Research paper-Minimum 1250 words in the body of the paper dealing with a composer being covered. The oral presentation may be completed at the time the course covers that era.
4.Final Examination-ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY! Covers mainly the last half of the quarter's work. Final is Wednesday Mar.23 9:30-11:30
5.Attendance. 5 absences will be the maximum before penalties accrue. For each succeeding absence your grade will drop from an A to A- to B+ to B to B- to C+ to C to C- etc. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL CLASSWORK, ASSIGNMENTS, EXERCISES, AND TESTS WHETHER YOU ARE THERE OR NOT! 5 absences may be made up by listening to 5 hours of King FM 98.l or classical CD’s and writing 1 page for each hour of listening.
6.Attending l classical concert is required with ticket & 1 page.
