General Description:  MU 116 is a survey course covering the development of rock music from its roots before the fifties and its history in the fifties through the present day.  There will be a combination of lecture, in-class listening, and in- class video/DVD-viewing sessions with discussion.  Technical musical knowledge is not required but will enrich the experience.

 

Required text- Rockin' in Time fifth edition, David P. Szatmary.

Optional text:  The Art of Rock and Roll, Charles T. Brown

 

Assignments:  There will be one assigned paper, a mid-term and a final exam. Students will have the option of making a class presentation on current rock music for extra credit.

 

Grading:  Letter grades will be assigned based on class participation: 20%, written assignment 30%, mid-term 25% and final 25%

 

Handouts:  Downloadable documents relevant to the course will be posted to the class website.  On the second week of class each member will receive an audio CD set with examples of rock music from each decade.  These sets must be returned before the final class due to copyright law.

 

Notes:  Students are responsible for assignments and material assigned during their absence.   Please check with classmates or the instructor after any absence. Written assignments may be shared with the class for instructional purposes.   Assignment due dates and scheduled class events will be posted on the class website accessible at mybcc.net.  check this site for announcements and downloadable documents.

To identify song structure including verse, chorus, breaks, bridges breakdowns and instrumental solos
