(We cover lesson 20 through lesson 23)

2.      Genki Workbook 2

3.      Supplementary materials at the MyBC class site

Make sure you have a Bellevue College e-mail account. Study aids such as audio files, workbook answers, lecture highlights, and links to the self-study website for Genki learners are provided at the MyBC class site. They are all posted in “Shared Documents”. If you do not have internet access at home, you can log onto MyBC at the Library Media Center, Computer Lab(N250), or Language Lab(A244).

Expectations:

·         Students are expected to prepare and review the materials (grammar, vocabulary, Kanji) covered in class everyday along with completing assigned homework.

·         Students are expected to attend every class on time. Roll is called at the beginning of the class. If you arrive late or leave early, it may penalize your participation points.

·         Your participation and practice during classes are absolutely necessary and very important to language learning. Your instructor will evaluate your daily participation.

·         If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain information missed during your absence by checking MyBC Class Sites in order to catch up with class.

Attendence/Participation:

Attend each class ready to work in Japanese. Daily review outside of class is essential to have effective practice in class and maintain what you have learned since this course meets only two days a week. Bring your textbook, workbook, and printed Task Sheets which are posted on MyBC to class to be ready to participate actively with class activities. Students who are tardy will receive half credit and students who are absent will receive no credit for each hour. Please sign up for the emergency school closure notification at: http://bellevuecollege.edu/alerts/LogIn.aspx

Tests:

There will be 3 lesson tests to check your mastery of the materials at the end of each lesson. Content from lesson 23 will be included as part of final exam. Please see the class schedule posted on the MyBC Class site for the test dates. On the day of each test, turn in your self-corrected workbook for that lesson.

Quizzes:

There will be at least 4 kanji quizzes. You will be tested only on reading and meaning of kanji words. However, learning to write kanji is strongly recommended especially if you plan to continue studying Japanese in the future.

No test or quiz make-ups will be given except for the case of emergencies such as a death in the family or serious illness. You must make up the missed test or quiz within a week.

Homework:

Turn in completed, self-corrected workbook pages on the lesson test day. To correct your homework, refer to the “Genki Workbook Answers” posted on MyBC.  Please use a colored pen for self-corrections. Partially finished homework will not receive full credit. Audio files for listening practices in the workbook are also posted on MyBC.  Please make it a habit to do the workbook pages each day which cover the grammar you have learned in class.

You must turn in the hand-written “Using Kanji” page from the workbook on kanji quiz day.

Late homework is only accepted in case of unexpected emergency.

Oral Presentation:

Each student will give a short oral presentation at the end of the quarter. The details about oral presentation will be announced later.

Final Exam:

The final exam is comprehensive, covering materials from Lesson 1 through Lesson 23, focusing on Lesson 20-23. The final exam will be on Wednesday, June 15 at 5:30 pm in A243.

Study Recommendations:

1.      Set a time for studying Japanese every day.

2.      Read the grammar explanations in the textbook and write down your questions before class.

3.      If your questions aren’t answered during the grammar introduction in class, ask for further explanation.

4.      Make flash cards to memorize vocabulary and kanji. Write a sample sentence with the word used in it. So you can remember verb groups and the particle used with the verb, etc.

5.      Log onto your MyBC Class site and practice with the audio files as often as possible.

6.      Review the materials you learned in class everyday by completing the workbook, listening to the audio files, and memorizing flash cards.

7.      Participate in class activities and feel free to make mistakes.

8.      If you start to have a problem or difficulty learning new materials, consult with me as soon as possible.
