Course Information

Course Description and Objectives

This course is designed to provide beginners (without prior knowledge of Italian) with a variety of tools aimed at developing their communicative competence in the four major language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing, as well as to acquire familiarity with Italy and Italian culture.

We will cover (6 Capitoli) thematically organized and structured so to provide ample opportunity to practice the target language, equally supporting language comprehension and language production.

It is my hope all students, regardless of grade earned, end the course with a better understanding of the Italian language, a deepened awareness of the Italian Culture and its people, and a renewed desire to continue Italian.

We will communicate in Italian as much as possible using MyItalianLab, so make sure your e-mail account is valid.

Course Requirements and Grade Distribution

Attendance on time and participation are expected to learn and make progress in the language, which will facilitate your instructor’s fair and accurate assessment of your performance in the course.  You are allowed 3 absences w/o penalizing your participation portion of the grade.  ¹ Please, be considerate of others if you are going to be absent and are collaborating on a project.  Stay in touch!  Note: Everyone begins w/ 100 pts. in the attendance and participation portion of the grade only; beginning w/ the fourth absence, 5 pts. will be deducted for every absence.  In addition, some points may be deducted for lack of participation in class at the discretion of the instructor. Participation may be negatively impacted by refusing to speak Italian, not bringing the textbook, refusing to take part in pair/group activities, and oral drills. Attenzione! 3 tardies = 1 absence!  15%

Tests are at the end of each capitolo. The lowest test grade will be dropped.  No make-up tests are allowed except for extenuating circumstances or BC sponsored events requiring your presence. Contact me the day you return to class to arrange a make-up test, if not, I will assume you chose to drop the test missed.  I make Practice Tests available on MyItalianLab one or two days prior to our capitolo test. Practice tests are neither required nor valid towards credit points.  20%

Assignments (Compiti) are called SAM (Student Activities Manual) activities, which include Workbook, Lab, and Video to practice all language skills. The activities are completed online through MyItalianLab. Follow My ItalianLab Calendario for specific activities, due dates (time is always 11:59pm PT), and important notes.  For each assigned activity per lesson, you have three attempts. Work diligently. Warning! If you open an activity and subsequently close it or begin one and close it prior to completion, it will be considered one attempt of the three.  It is important you keep pace and avoid falling behind schedule as it will negatively impact class participation and, ultimately, your grade.  You are responsible to complete the activities due that day, preferably prior to class time so you’ll feel ready to confidently and actively participate. Check MyItalian Lab daily!  Do not play catch-up cramming assignments!  Work diligently and organize your time accordingly.  If extenuating circumstances prevent you from completing an activity by the due date, let me know and complete it as soon as possible, if you would like me to consider it for points (credit) past the deadline, be specific about which activity it is by e-mailing me title and number of the activity/ies using MyItalianLab. I assign “Practice activities” occasionally, which are neither required nor count towards a grade. You will receive a final grade per capitolo upon completion of the SAM activities. 20%

Oral presentations will consist of one group project and one interview w/ your instructor (time permitting) or pair project. Details, topics and sign-up time sheet announced on MyBC as the date approaches.  (See under “Attendance” for related information). 20%

Final exam (ESAME) is comprehensive.  All material covered from the Capitoli will be included.  The EXAM will include sections to assess  1) An aural or listening comprehension  2) Writing  3) Reading comprehension  4) Culture  5) Speaking   Specifics will be provided in class and posted on MyBC as time approaches.  25%
