Description and Objectives ♦
The course will cover four Lecciones
(5-8) designed to strengthen the students’ language skills and further
develop cultural competency. You will
progress beyond the First-Year level at BCC or three years of H.S.
Spanish. (It is recommended you follow
the sequence w/o interruption between quarters, if schedule allows.) In this course, you will draw from and
build upon the knowledge acquired in the past by a more in-depth grammar
review; in addition, you will acquire new vocabulary and phrases, and study
new cultural material drawn from a variety of subjects from the
Spanish-speaking world. The course
will offer many opportunities to practice the target language as the lectures
and activities are conducted entirely in Spanish. Furthermore, already acquired vocabulary and
major grammatical concepts will be recycled in each lesson as they are
incorporated in daily conversation in class to improve comprehension and
strive for more accurate self-expression.
Students will practice all four language skills: listening, speaking,
writing, and reading; culture is also incorporated as a pivotal part for
conversation and in-context grammar usage and vocabulary, thus furthering the
understanding of the Hispanic world.
Culture is an integral part of the learning of any foreign language,
so you are expected to be “open-minded” about it. More specifically, this course exposes
students to real-life situations that easily simulate or relate to anyone’s
daily life where ample time is devoted to oral expression in class in a free
and creative way. Students will read
about some past and contemporary figures of Hispanic-American literature and
pop culture as an introduction to the vast panorama of Spain and Latin
America, and hopefully, this introduction will foster and nurture more –in-depth interest in Hispanic culture for future
studies. Most if not all of the assignments are completed online and reviewed
in class. ♦To effectively make progress in the
course, it is important to incorporate the ancillary material attached with
the text, and cohesively integrate it into the learning process. Students are encouraged to establish connection
with the Spanish-native speakers on campus and in the community at-large in
order to cultivate a greater appreciation for the target language and
culture. The Hispanic community, the
library, the Spanish media (ex: TV, Radio, magazines, newspapers, the
Internet, etc…) are all great sources to improve language and cultural
competency. Course
Requirements ♦
Attendance and Participation are mandatory!
All absences and tardy are unexcused. You are allowed 3
absences during the quarter without jeopardizing your participation grade
(Refer to Exceptions). FYI: Everyone begins with 100 pts. (A) in
the participation portion of the grade.
Points are deducted for excessive absences and tardy, for lack of
active participation, and for refusal to speak the target language. ¡Ojo! (5 points will automatically be
deducted beginning with the fourth absence), 10 with the sixth, and so
on) and for numerous tardy (3 tardy = 1 absence; 30 min. late = 1
absence). In order to monitor your
progress and assess you accurately, attendance and active participation are
necessary and expected. Have the
textbook and SAM always with you.
Please do not contact me if you are going to be absent—no need. I may
not be able to provide assignments on e-mail or phone in time for you to
complete the activities for next-class day.
I encourage you to exchange e-mail or ph.# with a couple of classmates
for deberes or tarea. Speak Spanish at all times. Resort to synonyms,
gestures, paraphrasing, circumlocutions, and any other technique you can draw
from to help you communicating using the target language. Eventually, it will get easier. Listen attentively not only to your
instructor, but also to your classmates.
Ask questions, volunteer answers, offer suggestions, share opinions,
contradict, role-play, and help others if they are struggling with an activity
or grasping a concept. Enthusiasm and
genuine interest in the subject will reward you with an enjoyable and
learning experience. ¡Habla español! ♦ Test
(Pruebas) and Quiz. There will be 4 tests (pruebas) and approximately approx. 4-6 pop-quizzes.
The prueba will be at the
end of each lección. The lowest test and quiz score will be
dropped at the end of the quarter.
If you miss one test and /or one quiz, the one missed will receive a
grade of 0 (F) and will be dropped at the end of the quarter. You are not allowed to refuse to take a
quiz. Everyone present in class has to
oblige. Tests are worth 100 points (50
x2) and quizzes are worth 50 points (25x 2). ♦ Oral
Presentations/Projects There will be two oral presentations (one in small
groups one in pairs or individual). The instructor will provide guidelines
and details about the oral skits/reports as the date approaches on MyBCC. One grade will be assigned for all students
in the group/one grade for the pair.
Both grades will be averaged for your final oral presentation’s
grade. The instructor will select groups
and/or pairs working together.
Occasionally, due to unexpected circumstances, the instructor may change
the number of presentations or the pair presentation into an individual
presentation depending on class size and time available.
♦ Homework
(Deberes/Tarea). Assignments are
announced on the Supersite on a
daily basis. Selection at the discretion of your instructor. Occasionally,
some activities are identical to the ones in your textbook, while others are
not available on your textbook but only online. It is important you complete
the required assignment prior to coming to class to actively participate in
class discussions. Don’t be caught
behind or unprepared! L The Supersite activities are divided in
TEXTBOOK and WEBSAM: WEBSAM
activities will be graded. You will receive 4 grades (one for each lección) at the conclusion of the
lesson based on the work completed and its accuracy. The total of the points earned per activity
will be added and divided by the number of activities assigned by your
instructor. The deadline is published on the Supersite and it is the same day
of the lesson test. You are able to complete an assignment after the
deadline; however, 10% is automatically subtracted per each day the activity
is completed late. Keep that in mind. TEXTBOOK
activities are assigned daily and are only for credit. You will receive one grade
for Textbook Supersite activities based on the % you have completed at the
discretion of the instructor at the end of the course. So, please do not
stress about it or get frustrated if you run into a glitch with textbook
activities. IMPORTANTE: If you are experiencing technical difficulties accessing the
Supersite or you suspect that you have honestly completed correctly an
activity (Textbook or WEBSAM) but it showed as incomplete or all responses as
“incorrect” 1)contact the Live Technical Help displayed at the bottom left of
the Supersite page, 2) use a different PC (Lab A244 during Open Lab Hours),
and lastly, 3) inform your instructor about the activity in question and as a
one-time courtesy, the activity will be reset for credit/points. Once again, this is at the discretion of
the instructor. It is important you
access the Supersite on a daily basis to check for “Assignments Pending”
on the top right of the student page and, occasionally, “Announcements”
by the instructor are posted for the class.
The instructor will also provide feedback as necessary. In order to maximize the chances to do
better next time, please read the corrections. ♦ Final
Exam (Examen). It is comprehensive. It will cover all the material studied
in the 4 lessons and
information provided during the individual presentations in class. Consult your calendario for the date and time for this course’s final. The
final exam schedule can be found online as well as on the paper copy of BCC Credit Class Schedule. In
the event of scheduled exam conflict with another course final, inform both
instructors to discuss the possibility of rescheduling one of the two
exams. Make arrangements at least two
weeks prior the final exam. I will do
my best to accommodate you at a mutual suitable day and time. FINAL EXAM DATE
WILL NOT CHANGE TO ACCOMODATE TRAVEL PLANS. ♦ Make-Up
Policy. No make-ups are allowed except under the following circumstances: 1) Official BCC competition/event/activity which requires your
presence a) Provide a schedule and coach/program director’s signature 2) Serious injury or illness that requires hospitalization or bed
rest b) Provide attending physician’s note not related to you 3) Death in the family (pet included) c) Provide the funeral director’s note (or other official
documentation) 4) Your death d) May you rest in peace!
¡Qué en paz descanse! You will be greatly missed. ¡Ojo! In the event of 1, 2 and 3 try to
complete the work missed as soon as possible.
It is solely your responsibility to approach the instructor to
schedule a make-up at a mutually agreeable time and date. ♦
A hardship withdrawal (HW) will be considered only for extenuating
circumstances and providing proofs.
An Incomplete (I) will be considered if the final cannot be taken
and/or one or both of the oral presentations due to unforeseen reasons
beyond student’s control. Please
consult for specific information on grades and how to proceed in case of HW
or I request. http://bellevuecollege.edu/catalog/enroll/grades.asp ♦ Academic Conduct. (Conducta académica). No act of plagiarism will be tolerated or condoned. In the event a student
cheats or plagiarizes any of the work assigned, during a test/quiz, or any
other project and assignments (including the Supersite), the work in question
will receive a O credit = F. A second
offense of cheating and/or plagiarism will result in an F as final grade for
the course. Visit the A&H for
Students Procedures and Expectations policy:

environment. -

courses. -
Inform the
instructor prior to class if you need to leave early. -

building. -
Familiarize
yourself with the evacuation procedure posted by the door. -
Do not take it
personally if the instructor corrects your pronunciation or answers. You are here to learn. -

Feel free to
contact me and visit me during office hours with concerns you may have or to
just say ¡Hola! -
No cell phones and
beepers should be kept on. Use the
vibrating mode or have it on at your own risk! In the event a cell phone or beeper (watch)
goes off, you will lose 3 points on your next test. In the event the instructor’s cell phone
goes off, the entire class will be awarded 3 points! J -
Turn off your iPod
while in class. No electronic devices are permitted on the desk while taking
a test. ♦
Tutoring. The Tutoring Center is located in D 204. Consult the website for this
quarter’s schedule or visit the center in person to pick one up or print one
from www.bellevuecollege.edu/tutoring.
The
tutors are fellow students, so be considerate of their work-study time. The
drop-in tutoring sessions are for all.
If you seek individual tutoring, you will need to fill out a form
asserting you are earning a grade of C- or below, and your instructor will
approve it electronically. They are available online at the address
above. The director of the tutoring
center will pair you with a tutor based on availability and schedule
requested. Always consult your
instructor if considering seeking help with Spanish. Remember:
Tests and quizzes results are not always a valid not complete indication of
your overall grade for the class.
Lastly, you may seek a private tutor outside BCC if you prefer. If you are very good and confident in your
Spanish ability, consider offering your services at the Tutoring Center
helping Spanish I, II, III students succeed in their Spanish courses; if you
know any other language well (or excel at any subject) consider applying to
become a tutor. It’s great experience
and looks great on your résumé. STUDY AT LEAST 1 to 2 HOURS PER DAY FOR THIS
CLASS. USE SPANISH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE—the more you use it, the more it becomes
part of your daily life—not something abstract, a mere academic subject. ♦
