Outline
1
Environmental Health Issues
  • Xenobiotics: chemicals that provide important clues about the way a substance foreign to an organism interferes with the body’s natural signaling pathways
2
What is a Chemical?
  • A chemical is a substance produced by or used in a chemical process
  • Refer to our IDS website and look at Chapter 2 of Cunningham and Cunningham for the different chemical processes that have been listed on those slides
  • For example: the water we drink; the air we breathe; the foods we eat and so are a result of a chemical process
3
Human Growth Hormones
  • Hormones are the chemical messengers of our body
  • Hormones are secreted by the endocrine system and used at the cellar level for communication between body tissue including the brain, organs, other glands, muscles and other tissues of the body
4
Geography and Geology
  • The word “geo”  or “ge” is defined as “earth”, thus, the word “geography” is the study of the earth and its features and of the distribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity.
  • “geology” is the scientific study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth. It is also, the structure of a specific region of the earth’s surface; and also, the scientific study of the origin, history and structure of the solid matter of a celestial body.
  • What is the point of this clarification?
5
Group Projects
  • You are expected to know the geography of the country you have chosen for your group work as well as the geography of the region where the country is located.
  • The geology of the country/region will indicate what chemical processes have occurred or are occurring presently, such that it impacts on the environment of the nation and the people.
6
Human Diseases
  • Human diseases are traced to the chemical processes by location, diet, activities and other related information as proved by scientific research data.
  • Again, I will ask you to refer to the IDS website for the geography of diseases (Chapter 8 of Cunningham and Cunningham).
7
Leading Causes of Death World-wide
  • Figure 8-1 listed the leading causes of death globally from Cardiovascular disease to Cancers, Lung diseases etc.
  • Review all the slides and use the information in your group activities discussing environmental and economic activities vis-à-vis sustainable development.
