PURPOSES AND OBJECTIVES OF A LITERATURE COURSE |
The purpose of this course
is to increase your awareness in reading literature so that you may enjoy it
more thoroughly as a conscious art form.
The objectives in teaching this awareness are as follows: |
1. |
To show you how a writer
focuses your attention on his ideas by deliberate techniques of selection,
association, and repetition in his writing |
2. |
To increase your retention
of significant detail in writing since it is this
detail that guides your response to a given work and enables you to
communicate it to another person. |
3. |
To
introduce you to a variety of writers and styles in writing and how a
writer’s style relates to his intention in a given work. |
4. |
To enable you to apply an
analytical approach in exploring a work on your own, without class help. |
5. |
To clarify any special
terminology used in the field you are studying. |
6. |
To make you aware of the
characteristics of the genre or time period or
philosophical background of the literature you are studying and how each
influences the literary product. |
7. |
To show how literature as
an art form can be seen from many different
perspectives and how widening one’s perspectives can enable one to enjoy
literature that otherwise migh seem foreign or unintelligible. |
