Catalog Description:

Technique work at the barre and center floor designed to the dancer’s instrument, to gain flexibility and strength, to extend the student’s movement vocabulary, to develop awareness of the use of shape, space, time and energy.

Class Time:

Begins 35 minutes after the hour.  Dismissed approximately 15 minutes after the hour.

Dance Clothing:

Leotards and tights, or warm-up pants, t-shirts/sweatshirts.  No jeans or restrictive clothing.  Shoes not necessary, but ballet slippers or a soft, skid resistant shoe acceptable.

Class:

Usually begins with slow movements to warm up the body.  Punctuality is important in that this not only prevents injury, but includes important work on technique.  The next section of the class usually covers progressive movement across the floor, followed by learning a movement sequence to dance which incorporates technique worked on earlier in the class.  The movement sequence also works on timing, phrasing and dynamics.

Grading:

Based on mastery of technique and learning the dance/movement sequences.  Unlike some academic courses, the final grade is accumulative.  Along with individual progress, attendance and participation are required.  All of the combinations are reviewed throughout the quarter.  As the individual’s technique improves so should his/her performance.  Although grading in dance is by nature subjective, a general guideline is this:

1.

Know the movement sequences

2.

Know the counts

3.

Be able to perform at regular tempo

4.

Be secure in movement, technique & rhythm to perform with ease.

Grades are based on mastery of technique and performance.  Effort is judged by attendance and participation.

No written tests are given.

Office Hours:

The instructor will be available immediately after the class in the studio to help those who get behind or those who want to improve present level of ability.
