COURSE DESCRIPTION

Photography ROCKS! The more you throw yourself into it the greater the reward!

This class is designed as an introduction to some of the technical and conceptual issues surrounding digital photography as a means for artistic exploration and expression. By the end of the term, students will have control over their cameras, have developed a digital work flow, and should be able to discuss the conceptual issues involved in the production of their work and final project. Software includes: Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Silverfast and others. Largely my goal is help you get to a point where you can develop your own work flow at home.

Pace of class assumes general computer literacy but many students have never worked with image editing software.

METHODOLOGY

While every quarter brings new innovation and course materials, the class will consist of lectures; slide presentations, demonstrations, online resources, video tutorials, lab time - in and out of class, critiques, and individual meetings. Critiques are mandatory and participation is required. Critiques may be held in C151 next to the photo lab.

EXPECTATIONS

I work REALLY hard to provide quality, focused, organized and effective instruction and in return, I expect you to take responsibility for your role in YOUR education. Expect to spend time outside of class photographing, working in the lab and reviewing materials online.

A great deal of the course material will be presented through a broad range of online resources including this website. You must take responsibility for your education by committing to interact with these resources on a regular basis. Expect to spend time outside of class reading, reviewing online materials, and photographing.

There will be lots of time to work in the lab during class. Most of the feedback you will receive will be given in person in the lab and in critique.
Pay attention to what is said about your work as well as the work of your classmates.

NO CELL PHONES:
I will drop a letter grade off your final grade every time I see you on your phone during class. Just because I didn't call you out, doesn't mean you got away with anything. If you need to know what time it is, wear a watch or look at the upper right corner of your screen.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is required! You may miss 3 classes without penalty, the 4th absence will result in the lowering of your final grade by one letter, and the 5th absence will result in an F for the class. As this is a studio art class with no textbook, the first 5 or so classes are essential. PLEASE DON’T MISS ANY CLASS THE FIRST TWO WEEKS! You are responsible for whatever you miss due to absence! DON’T EXPECT A PRIVATE TUTORIAL FROM THE INSTRUCTOR BECAUSE YOU WERE ABSENT. Critiques, exams, and presentations are mandatory and participation is required.

Arriving late or leaving early is 1/2 of an absence.
Unrelated internet surfing or checking email, facebook, etc. will count as an absence.

GRADING

These factors will be considered in generating evaluations:

Effort, Attitude, Participation, Attendance, Adherence to Assignments and Submission Guidelines, Technical Accomplishment, Aesthetic Aptitude and Conceptual Exploration. Evaluations will be distributed three times during the quarter. Those three grades will be averaged to determine your final grade.

ALL WORK MUST BE SUBMITTED IN A FOLDER AS SHOWN ON THE FIRST DAY!

Late assignments will lose one letter grade per/class day, and you will be subject to a discretionary assignment of of my choosing prior to a grade being recorded. Late assignments are disqualified from the re-submission opportunity described below.

Dissatisfied with an evaluation? Assignments may be re-photographed and resubmitted in an effort to improve the original grade. All images must be new roll and must demonstrate significant improvement. Resubmitted work must have resubmission as the label. (submission guidelines)

EXCUSES

My role is not to be the arbiter of which excuses are valid and which are – excuses.
Please don’t greet me at the beginning of class with your excuse for why you are not prepared.

Exceptions: If you have medical information to share with me in the event of an emergency, please contact me via email or come to see me during office hours. Emergency preparedness is important! If you need course modifications / adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, I can refer you to our Disability Resource Center (DRC).
If you prefer, you may contact them directly by going to B132 or by calling 425.564.2498 or TTY 425.564.4110. Information is also available on their website at http://bellevuecollege.edu/drc/
