Requirements for this course are the completion of four specific, assigned projects, each project worth one credit.  In addition, there will be basic exercise-in-technique assignments designed to develop dexterity in the handling of clay, specifically handbuilding methods including: pinch, coil, and slab for Art 260. Participation in clay mixing is also required.  Throwing on the wheel is optional and NOT required for Art 260.  During Summer Quarter emphasis will be placed on two out-of-doors firing techniques: RAKU and primitive/sawdust firings.  Art 261 focuses on developing throwing skills on the wheel.

 

Week 1

June 26- 29

Introduction; discussion and slide presentation for first project “DRINKING VESSEL”/VESSEL project;  handbuilding techniques: pinch, slab, coil; surface technique: underglazes.  Basic wheel throwing techniques: centering, the cylinder and shaping and trimming.

 

Week 2

July 3 –  6

Sketches due for “DRINKING VESSEL” project Monday, July 3; Wheel throwing: bowls; discussion and slide presentation on “TWO DIMENSIONAL” project; low fire glazes discussed as surface technique.  Holiday on Tuesday, July 4 – NO CLASS

 

Week 3

July 10 -13

Discussion and examples of firing techniques including RAKU, sawdust, and cone 10 high fire reduction; discussion and slide presentation on “THREE-DIMENSIONAL” project; sketches due for “2-D” project Tuesday, July 11 surface techniques: Cone 10 glazes covered. Wheel throwing: plates

 

Week 4

July17 – 20

Video on primitive firing today. Sketches due for “3-D” project Tuesday, July 25; discussion of project #4; additional wheel throwing: sectional forms; RAKU and sawdust firings during 3rd or 4th weeks, weather permitting.  Load cone 10 gas kiln Tuesday, July18 and fire Wednesday –Thursday, July 19 - 20.

 

Week 5

July 24 - 27

Sketches due for FINAL project Tuesday, July 25; additional wheel throwing techniques; surface techniques; surface techniques utilizing overglazes; group critique on 260 drinking vessel and 261 ‘vessel’ project.

 

Week 6

July 31 – Aug. 3

Last week for greenware—ALL work/projects MUST BE DRY and ready for BISQUE firing by Tuesday, August 1, and also low fire glaze preparatory to overglazing.  Loading and firing Cone 10 gas kiln (Tuesday, August 1)  and firing Wed/Thurs. Aug. 2 & 3.

 

Week 7

Aug. 7 - 10

 

Find RAKU and sawdust firings Monday, August 7; Final low fire glaze and overglaze firings.  Tuesday, August 8 critiques and grading on Thursday, August 10 (attendance is mandatory!) Week Seven is also studio clean-up week.
